Welcome!
The Cartographers’ Guild is a forum created by and for map makers and aficionados, a place where every aspect of cartography can be admired, examined, learned, and discussed. Our membership consists of professional designers and artists, hobbyists, and amateurs—all are welcome to join and participate in the quest for cartographic skill and knowledge.
Although we specialize in maps of fictional realms, as commonly used in both novels and games (both tabletop and role-playing), many Guild members are also proficient in historical and contemporary maps. Likewise, we specialize in computer-assisted cartography (such as with GIMP, Adobe apps, Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, etc.), although many members here also have interest in maps drafted by hand.
If this is your first visit, be sure to check out the FAQ. You will have to register before you can post or view full size images in the forums.
Me me being me. Being angry with myself or puzzling through a skill or talent shortcoming or just explaining my way of seeing things....
We all know how much wonderful stuff there is here in the Guild. There are incredibly talented artists that inspire us and leave us in awe. I think that sometimes that can be a bad thing. Let me explain, I am currently working on a castle for my Darkness Falls:The Fall of the Kingdom of Shendenflar Project. Another member of the Guild is also working on a castle. This member is FAR more talented with this sort of thing then I am and to me that's not an issue. I am confident in my own skills and ...

The human mind is pretty amazing. I'm fascinated by mine. How can it possibly keep coming up with idea after idea and then chasing after said ideas like a puppy chasing a ball. I was happily working on my "Adventures of Calan Stonebridge" encounter map series and a long shelved project was suddenly unearthed by my brain like a child finding a dusty box in Grandmothers attic. I don't think I have ADD, I just think my brain is trying to get it's "to do" list done. Calan Stonebridge, ...

Sometimes this place can be a bit... intimidating. There are so many talented people making so many nice maps that sometimes it can be a bit frighting. I'm fairly secure in my belief in my own talent when it comes to encounter map making and story telling and in a less secure way my large scale map making skills. One area that I had NO confidence in was my ability to create objects. You know, the little details that make an encounter map. Barrels and crates and horses and things like that. There ...

I think there should be a warning label on this site..something like, "Warning. studies have shown that the Cartographer's Guild can be addictive in certain individuals..." I am one of those individuals. Now I DO have a job..well sort of I have been a restaurant manager for most of my adult life. I started right out of the military in 1990 and have been doing it ever since. Recently the company that I work for has "downsized" closing 5 of the 15 restaurants it owns including ...

It had no "soul" it was just a collection of little buildings on nice orderly streets, fine for realism I suppose but not so much for my tastes. I like a city with surprises and a lot of back alleys and secrets. I also realized that I was ...
