I might be giving away the farm on this one, since I consider this to be my best style, but since I like to teach and make a tut for just about everything -- I present to you my atlas style. It's not meant to be the end-all be-all but rather an introductory course...where you can take it and adapt and change things as you see fit. I know my tuts tend to be lengthy and sometimes difficult so I'll do my best to help you out with any questions/problems you might have.
I'm having problems on step 21, When you want to inverse the base layer. I'm able to Ctrl-click on the base layer, once it's "selected" or when I see small lines running along the outside of the map. However when I go to select and press Inverse, it errors me and says "No pixels have been selected". This has been frustrating as I can't seem to inverse any of my other layers either. I'm using Photoshop CC btw. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the info. I used the Kindari revision of your Atlas style for my fantasy setting. Very cool, and easy to do! I used thicker rivers because I wanted them to show up better, and I used a bit of texture to create my forests. Thanks again for your guide!
LOVE this style and the tutorial is much appreciated! I got started creating my own "atlas"-style world and things were proceeding nicely (at least, for a relative PS novice). Then I discovered that Adobe removed the lighting effects in PSE 12! Obviously that's a key in getting the look of this style. DREAMS CRUSHED!
Oh well, I may try and fumble my way forward anyhow and see if I can accomplish it with some other methods.
Thanks for this tutorial!!! but some things doesn't work in CS6 version of photoshop. everytime I need to inverse I delete the wrong one and the section about borders, I don't understand what you ment by it, can you please help?
Just found this tutorial through reddit, and it's great! Just one question though. I'm sort of a newbie to photoshop and mapmaking. I've already got the basic outlines of some landmasses that I want to use. I'd like to make their coastlines look more realistic and add all the details found in this tutorial. How would I alter these instructions so that I don't have to use randomized land shapes?
