In honour of his winning the February 2016 challenge, we decided to go with Carnifex's suggestion for this month's topic. Guilders were asked to create
"a dungeon/underground map ... perhaps a fantasy battle map or a cave, or an underground crypt, a subway map, or even a post apocalyptic enclave."
We have to give credit to participants for the wide variety of map styles they created. All in all, we had 12 entries showcasing the talent and imagination of Guild artists. If you were expecting a bunch of grid-based dungeon maps ... you'd be disappointed!
Among the entries, Southern Crane submitted a hand-drawn map
"Underground City of the Anasazi Tribe", GLS created a city in a large underground cavern titled
"Silver Hollow", and runner-up Sapiento's entry
"The Hall of the Scarlet King" utilised stained glass-style illustrations. Before we move on to the winner, we have to take a moment to highlight Waldronate's beautifully minimalist map
"After The Last Torch Is Gone" (you might want to check the date of the entry!) Waldronate will be forever known as the John Cage of Cartography (thank you Abu for that insight!)
Our winner this month is Lingon with his wonderful entry "An illustrated archaeological survey" chronicling the exploits of a group of explorers including a certain character named Ms. Croft! Cruelly, Lingon's map has left us with a cliff-hanger ending and he steadfastly refuses to say what happened next, muttering something about taking the secret to the grave....
Lingon wins his third gold compass, taking his total awards to five. Well done, sir! You can
check out the WIP thread here.
As for April's challenge, we've taken the decision
not to run a regular challenge this month, due to the huge GuildWorld project celebrating our 10th Anniversary. You can
read more about GuildWorld here. There'll be more on this in future blog posts.
