March / April 2016 Lite Challenge Results - Create a Compass Rose or Map Scale
We were a little late in starting the March/April Lite Challenge, so Bogie decided to go with a relatively simple theme this time. Guilders were asked to 'Create a Compass Rose or Map Scale'. Additionally, the element created should be available for other mappers to include in their work.
We had a fantastic response with 13 members taking part, all willing to create and share mapping elements with their fellow Guilders. Even more exciting was the huge range of styles on show. One of the best parts of the challenges is seeing how different people interpret the brief and bring their own creativity to the task, and this month was exceptional in its variety. Among the entries we had hand-drawn artwork, some fractal art, a 3D rendering, and a hand-painted painted egg (yes, a real one!)
Our winner this month is Josiah VE, with his "Sword and Shield Compass Rose" entry, and it is a most worthy winner. Josiah wins his first silver compass, so huge congratulations to him! You can see his WIP thread here.
Since all of the entries are available for others' use this month, I've included thumbnails and links to the originals at the bottom of this post. Thanks to everyone who took part this month!
April / May 2016 Lite Challenge
The new Lite Challenge is underway and our topic this month is "Map a Campsite." Bogie says...
This time the challenge is for you to map a campsite. Any kind of campsite, any genre, any location, any scale. You could do the classic fantasy campsite, a clearing in the woods with a campfire, a couple tents and bedrolls. or an oasis in the desert with a sheik's tent. or an entire army's bivouac as they prepare for battle, or a small cave in the side of a cliff where the escaped prisoners are resting for the night. or a regional map showing locations of safe campsites on the trade routes. or a small tent beside a gutted Tauntaun on the icy planet Hoth. Use your imagination. Use your skills. Have some fun. Win a pile of silver pieces,,, OK, 1 silver compass. Still worth it!
So, if you want to relive that memorable weekend when you decided, on a whim, to go camping, only it Would Not Stop raining and of course the tent leaked and everything got soaked, and you thought you'd die of hypothermia in June ... sorry, where was I? ... well, now's your chance! More information and entries here.
The Guild is 10!
On 20th April Cartographers' Guild celebrated its 10th birthday. Our gracious leader, Robbie, posted the first comment 10 years ago on 20th April, 2006 and, boy, have we come a long way since then!
A few members have posted some thoughts on the Guild in this thread, and J.Edward made a cake to celebrate.
Let's raise a glass of bubbly to the next ten years!
GuildWorld
Our epic community project, GuildWorld, continues to grow. Over 50 members signed up to map a world, and members have been hard at work on their maps all month. We'll write more about this once the maps are complete, but you can check out where we're at right now in the various threads below:
- Overview thread for general discussion and questions about the challenge itself
- General GuildWorld discussion (place names & other assorted topics)
- Climate and Biome discussion
- Place index & Composite Map
- GuildWorld Thumbnails
- Community Projects folder (containing all the individual mapping threads)
There are lots of interesting stories in many of the threads relating to each piece of land, so have a browse through and catch up on some world-building.
