July/August 2016 Lite Challenge Results
This month, our challenge was 'Map a Bandit Hideout'... any kind of Hideout, any genre, any location, any scale. Bogie said...
"You could do the classic fantasy Bandit Campsite in the forest, or a small cave complex, or a small village they have taken over, or a pirate's cove, or a space pirate's asteroid or a regional map showing locations of Bandit Hideouts on the trade routes or a group of three mountain trolls who have been stealing ponies from dwarves and have a nearby cave."
We had eleven entries this month, with some imaginative ideas and wonderfully creative mapmaking. Seems banditry and ambushes come naturally to a subset of Guild members! Our entries included the journal of a guardsman on the tail of a thief, the mountain base of a treasure hunter, and the ops computer of Mission Control, as well as assorted caves, campsites and other hideouts.
Our congratulations go to Teacup for his entry 'Grim Bob's Reiving Grounds'. Teacup's map was based on a real place, Glenmore, in the Scottish Highlands. In the map, however, Grim Bob has taken a few liberties with 'The Estate And Outlying Territories of Fergal Drumbull, Laird of Glenmore'. Teacup only joined the Guild in July, and it's great to see a new member winning with their first entry. You can see the WIP thread here. Teacup also posted a second version of the map without, err, Grim Bob's 'amendments'. You can see the alternative, coloured version here.
Honourable mentions to runners-up Falconius for 'Cave Hideaway' map, and lorelei for 'Halofyte Ridge Bandit Camp'. Thank you once again to everyone who entered.
August/September 2016 Lite Challenge
August/September's Lite Challenge is well underway, and this month's theme, in honour of the Olympics, is 'Map an Arena'. There are still over two weeks to go before closing time, so let's see some pits, arenas and amphitheatres. You can see the current entries here.
August Regular Challenge
The regular challenge for August, 'Random Race, Random Place', will close in a few days, and the results for that will be up in the next week or so. You can have a peek at the entries here.
Guild Calendar
Did you know the Guild has a calendar? For some reason, it stopped in 2010 (two years ahead of the Mayans, because we're just that cool. ) Our admins have turned the crank on the time machine and the calendar is back. You can see it here. It's a little empty just now (OK, very empty) but we're thinking about events to fill it. If there's any event you think should be on the calendar, whether related to the Guild or in the real world, let us know.
End of Year Awards
We're working behind the scenes on our 'Map Oscars' (name to be confirmed) and are currently going through the suggestions and ideas from Guild members. If you've got thoughts on award categories, post 'em here. The overview discussion thread is here. We're hoping to have firmer news on this event within the next few weeks, so watch this space.
