    August Challenge Results

Following the success of July's 'Random Generator' challenge, Diamond decided to give the 'random' idea another go. This time, our theme was 'Random Race, Random Place'. Diamond explained...

This month's challenge will be another semi-random 'choose your map' type of deal, but a little more focused. It comes in two parts!

For the first part, roll a 12-sided die to determine which race you'll be mapping. You can roll up to THREE times, and select the result you like the best. Obviously we have to rely on the chivalrous honesty of our participants. (And also: I'm watching you! )

For the second part, roll another 12-sided die to determine the place you'll be mapping, Again, You can roll up to THREE times, and select the result you like the best.

If you don't have physical dice of your own, there's a multitude of virtual dice-rollers online, and Wizards of the Coast has an especially good one here: WOTC Dice Roller

The idea here is that you'll be mapping a location built or inhabited by a certain race, with enough variety to (hopefully) not discourage anyone from participating. I've tried to get a good selection of stuff in here.

    And now the lists:

    RACE

    1. Giant (any type)
    2. Human
    3. Lizardman
    4. Dwarf (any type)
    5. Minotaur
    6. Elf (any type)
    7. Ogre
    8. Orc
    9. Gnome
    10. Goblin
    11. Halfling
    12. Merman

    PLACE

    1. Village or Town
    2. Temple
    3. City
    4. Palace or Fortress
    5. Tower
    6. Dungeon/Catacomb/Sewer System
    7. Small region (part of a kingdom, an area of city-states, a duchy, etc.)
    8. Battlefield (could be a map of a battle's progression, a trench layout, a siege, etc.)
    9. 'Uncivilized' Area (so depending on what race you roll, it could be a steppe of orcish tribes, desolate mountains inhabited by primitive gnomes, etc.)
    10. Large region (kingdom, empire, etc.)
    11. School / University
    12. Stadium or Colosseum

We had a fantastic response once again (people really like these random challenges!) and some excellent maps in all manner of styles. Among the entries, we had some kickass battle maps (Bogie, ladiestorm and Wired), two underwater maps (Gamerprinter and lorelei) and even a 3D game (Robbie)!

Our winner this month is Snodsy with 'Tower of the Minotaur'. There is so much to like about this map from the clever perspective to the fantastic illustrations, not to mention the tragic story of the maidens who were devoured. Perhaps it was the 'Mom' tattoo that swung the vote! Snodsy wins his first gold compass, and he's clearly on a roll after winning a silver compass only a couple of months back. Huge congrats, Snodsy! Check out the WIP thread here.

Honourable mentions to our runners-up: Diamond came in second with his map 'The Reach' which included giants, goblins and humans in a large, mostly uncivilised area. Third place went to teacup, winner of the last Lite Challenge, with map 'Doreagul', a small Halfing region.

Thank you once again to everyone who entered. It's a pleasure and an education to watch these maps develop, and to enjoy the great diversity of styles and interpretations Guild mappers bring to these challenges.

    September 2016 Regular Challenge

September's challenge is up and running, and we have to thank Neyjour for the idea. Neyjour created a graphic showing fungal colour palettes and thought it would be a great idea for a challenge. The rules are...

    1. Pick a color palette from Neyjour's lovely selections. One palette only! Use it to create your map - any kind of map at all.

    2. Post it in the first post of your thread.

    3. You must use EVERY color in the palette, and you CANNOT use any other color.

So, Guilders, let's see what you can do with only a few colours! More info on the challenge here. Check out the entries here.
