    October 2016 Mapping Challenge Results

In honour of Halloween, October's challenge was 'Vampires!' Diamond wrote...

This month's Challenge revolves around everyone's favorite bloodsuckers: vampires! Your challenge this month is pretty straight-forward. Create a map in any style that has to do with vampires. That's it! No other restrictions!

    Some suggestions:

-something really on-point, like Castle Dracula
-maps of towns, forts, regions, etc from Justin Cronin's Passage trilogy
-the space vampire ship from the movie Lifeforce
-Neville's house from I Am Legend
-Dracula's journey from Transylvania to London
-an alternate history map of an Earth where vampires control some or all of the globe
(two cool examples of that are the Greyfriar series of books by C. & S. Griffith, and the novel Empire of Fear, by Brian Stableford)
-a clan stronghold of one of the Clans from Vampire: The Masquerade

Or anything else your fertile little minds can come up with!

Guild members showed their creativity with the diverse range of maps created. Among the entries, Bogie's map was inspired by the TV show & movie Dark Shadows. Carbus created The T64 Path, inspired by Justin Cronin's novel, The Passage. Niekell's inspiration for The Legend of Britter Kalt came from the Birthright D&D setting. Also inspired by RPG gaming, was Gamerprinter's Vampiric Star Ship entry. GLS went for a futuristic Great Britain titled 'Vampire Hunting in the 31st Century'. Our runner-up, kacey, went for a more traditional map depicting Count Dracula's European roots in her map of Romania.

Our congratulations this month go to first time entrant mat_r for 'Vampire's Mansion', an isometric depiction of Count Victor's Mansion. It's fantastic to see a newcomer win on their first challenge, and a well-deserved gold compass is on it's way to Mat. Check out the WIP thread here.

    November 2016 mapping challenge

Our new challenge is up and running, and should appeal to dungeon mappers especially! Titled 'Roll For Your Lives!', Diamond explains how it'll work...

This is a semi-dungeon-mapping challenge, so if you're not into that, just know what it is, going in. The idea here is that every participant starts out with one room, or Underdark chamber, or forest glade, whatever you want. This room can be located ANYWHERE in your overall map - in the middle, at the edge, wherever you want. It can be any size or shape you'd like.

With that in mind, roll ONE six-sided die. The result is how many exits from this room there are. Those exits can be on any wall, ceiling, or floor. They can all be on one wall, etc. if you want. They don't have to be traditional doors - they can be archways, holes, teleportation portals, whatever.

Now, for each of those exits, you get to draw a new chamber/hallway/path/etc. And for each of those new chambers, roll ONE six-sided die. If you roll a 1 - 4, that number is the number of exits from the room. If you roll a 5 or 6 however, you must place a trap in that room (the type is up to you). The new chambers can be any size or shape.

If you roll a trap, then roll a six-sided die on this table for the type of trap:

    1. Water-based
    2. Distracting illusions
    3. Chasm opens (where it leads or what kind of nasty stuff is at the bottom is up to you)
    4. Acid- or poison-based
    5. Fire-based
    6. Painting/statue/etc comes to life and attacks

That is the MINIMUM you have to map in this challenge, and again, it is honor-based. I cannot see what you get with your various rolls. (Or can I?) After you complete this minimum, you can keep adding whatever and however you want, either through continued random rolls, or in a more structured, plotted way, it's up to you.

You've got till the end of the month to take part, so let's see some epic dungeons! More information on the challenge here.
