December 2016 Challenge Results
December's challenge was 'Map a Siege'. Diamond wrote...
To wrap the year up, let's all map a siege, shall we? The focus can be as broad or as narrow as you want, and in any genre. Some examples include:
A Naval Blockade
The Alamo
The Siege of Stalingrad
A traditional medieval siege, on as small or grand a scale as you want
An attack on a circle of covered wagons
A tactical map of space marines trying to crack an alien outpost

December's a busy month and we perhaps had fewer entries than usual, as well as a withdrawal or two, but competition for the golden compass was as tough as ever. Well done to all who entered but honourable mentions especially to our runners-up. In third place was timallen with map 'The Siege of Jadotville' inspired by the Netflix show. Ilanthar came in second with 'The Siege of Has'Varech' created in Sketchup.
Our winner this month, by a fairly decisive margin, is JO with his entry 'Siege of Castle Hadleigh', which beautifully depicts the siege of a 14th century British castle. JO wins his first gold compass, and the congratulations of all at the Guild. Check out JO's WIP thread here.
January 2017 Challenge
January's challenge is already up and running, and this month your task is to 'Map a Song'. ChickPea says...
This month, your challenge is to map a song or piece of music. The map can be in any style or genre.
You can simply use the song title alone as the inspiration for your map, or, if you'd like to take it a bit further, you can incorporate the lyrics (if there are any) into your map, or if the song has any message or theme, you can introduce that concept too. Also, I'm defining 'song' pretty loosely, so acceptable entries would range from Taylor Swift's latest, to an operatic aria, to Dwarven drinking songs. It's entirely up to you.

The challenge runs till 31st January, so still plenty of time to enter. More info on the challenge here, and check out the current entries here.
Annual Awards
Preparations for our annual awards are underway, and very soon we'll be announcing categories and asking for nominations. Before we get to that, we need to decide on the award name. We're running a poll until 14th January, where you can vote for your favourite. If you haven't voted already, go do so now! You can choose as many or as few names as you like, and voting is anonymous.
Soon after the naming poll closes, we'll be announcing categories, so watch this space!
Guild City
A casual forum discussion has inspired a whole new community project! Guild members are jointly mapping a whole city and, if you'd like a piece of the action, there are still plenty of plots of land available. Honourable mentions to J.Edward for preparing the initial map, and to Mouse for her great organisational efforts with this project.
If you're a little lost with the many, many threads that are sprouting up, Mouse has helpfully prepared an FAQ which will hopefully answer your questions. If you still have questions, feel free to ask in the General Discussion thread. There's an index of available/taken districts here, and if you'd like to see what everyone else is mapping, take a look at the thumbnails here.
This project was mooted just over a week ago (as I write this), originally as a challenge idea, and within that short time it's exploded into an amazing mapping/world-building project with over 30 people signed up. Guild members are awesome!
There'll be more posts about Guild City as the project develops, but do have a read through the current threads and enjoy the creative ideas of our members. And if you'd like to join in, you'd be very welcome.
