    January 2017 Mapping Challenge

A new year and a new regular challenge. This time, Guild members were asked to 'Map a Song'. ChickPea wrote...

This month, your challenge is to map a song or piece of music. The map can be in any style or genre.

You can simply use the song title alone as the inspiration for your map, or, if you'd like to take it a bit further, you can incorporate the lyrics (if there are any) into your map, or if the song has any message or theme, you can introduce that concept too. Also, I'm defining 'song' pretty loosely, so acceptable entries would range from Taylor Swift's latest, to an operatic aria, to Dwarven drinking songs. It's entirely up to you.

Once again the Guild's diversity came to the fore with a great variety of songs AND mapping styles. We had a couple of songs from movies including Ladiestorm's entry 'Misty Mountains', inspired by The Hobbit soundtrack, and Tonnichiwa's sadly unfinished 'Brave Sir Robin' (and we're holding him to his promise to finish it!) Other entries included The Escape by DarkInfinity, based on the song "On The Road" by Cazzette, Space Boogie by Francissimo, inspired by the song by Kurupt, and The Ballad of the Alamo by Bogie, from the song by Marty Robbins.

Our 3rd placed entry by fabio p came from the Dead Kennedys song California Uber Alles. 2nd place went to Bryan G. McWhirter for Lannister theme tune 'Rains of Castamere' from A Song of Ice and Fire.

First place this month went to djan for an isometric version of the Madness song 'Our House'. djan wins his first gold compass, to go along with the silver compass he won a couple of months back. No more Lite Challenges for djan! Check out the WIP thread here.

Thanks to all who entered, and you all can finally stop humming those songs you mapped!

    February 2017 Regular Challenge

February's regular challenge is well underway. Ilanthar's in charge this month and he wants us to break all the rules...

This month's challenge is to do a map with "wrong" rules or inconsistent things, a map done as by someone with no clue of how geography, scales, climates, etc. works.
You can go wild and endly break the rules : place mountains or volcanoes with no reasons, place tiny mountains and gigantic trees, use 36 different scales, place arctic conditions at the equator, and of course, you surely don't have to fear the river police! The rivers going uphill are warmly recommanded!

It's time to let your inner anarchist out! More info here.

    Atlas Awards

A reminder that there are less than two weeks to get your nominations in. We'll be closing the threads on Sunday 26th February.

In case you missed it, we have a thumbnail gallery of all eligible maps now. You can access it via the link in Redrobes' comment here. Please note Redrobes' comment before you click the link. There are almost 700 images in the gallery and it might cause low powered devices to fall over! We wouldn't recommend visiting the link on a phone.

Remember that you can't nominate something that's already nominated. You can see all the categories and current nominations here.
