Opikanoba, daughter of the mists
by Thomrey
With all the recent excitement about the Atlas Awards, we've fallen behind somewhat with the challenge winners blog posts. Expect a few posts over the next two or three days, while we catch up.
This post focuses on the Jan / Feb '17 Lite Challenge.
This time, our theme was treasure hunting, and Guilders were asked to "Create a Treasure Map". Bogie wrote...
So the obvious type of Treasure Map would be a pirates map. Or it could be a handout used by the players in a game like D&D. Or a fancy map that is used at a kids adventure park. Lots of movies with inspiration here, Goonies, The Count of Monte Cristo, Indiana Jones, National Treasure. So Many Possibilities. Or make it something unique or personal.
You guys like your treasure, as we had a dozen entries for this one.
Among the entries were a couple inspired by classical music and literature (Treasure of the Mountain King by dvg94, from Grieg's Peer Gynt, and Treasure Island by fol2dol, based on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel). We also had a couple of maps that required a key to find the treasure (The Vivrim Coasts by GLS and 'The Greatest Treasure...sort of' by DarkInfinity). Damonjynx went for 'The Dragon's Hoard' in his dungeon treasure map. And, of course, it wouldn't be a proper treasure map without a few pirate captains. ReverendRover had 'Captain Scarle's Booty'. Rongar made The Hoard of Arr'r, a pirate treasure map which was found in the belongings of Capt'n Hieronymus Arr'r III. Tulio Botinha created Libertatia Ruins which depicts "the way to find Captain Henry Avery most precious gem, Libertatia the pirate city and all the treasures lost in there".
A special shout-out to Mixerbach for his map "You Are Here", a mall directory map, and a nice twist on the treasure map theme. Mixerbach unfortunately missed the deadline by 15mins, but deserves a mention anyway for a great map and some very gracious comments.
Our congrats this month go to thomrey for his map 'Opikanoba, daughter of the mists'. Thomrey created three versions of the map: a regular 'day time' version, a dark version showing hidden markings in secret ink (and you can read the thread to learn more about that!) and the final submission was a gif showing the transformation between the two version. (Other versions here.)
Thomrey wins his first silver compass, and the congratulations of the Guild. Check out the work-in-progress thread here. It's well worth a look, not just for a display of Thomas's excellent map-making skills, but also for the 'help' provided by other Guild members in the form of dragon skull sketches on Thomas's map!
Next post will be the February regular challenge. Watch out for that.
