  • Weekly Round-up - 27th November, 2017

  1. Welcome!

The Cartographers’ Guild is a forum created by and for map makers and aficionados, a place where every aspect of cartography can be admired, examined, learned, and discussed. Our membership consists of professional designers and artists, hobbyists, and amateurs—all are welcome to join and participate in the quest for cartographic skill and knowledge.

Although we specialize in maps of fictional realms, as commonly used in both novels and games (both tabletop and role-playing), many Guild members are also proficient in historical and contemporary maps. Likewise, we specialize in computer-assisted cartography (such as with GIMP, Adobe apps, Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, etc.), although many members here also have interest in maps drafted by hand.

If this is your first visit, be sure to check out the FAQ. You will have to register before you can post or view full size images in the forums.

    Oct/Nov Lite Challenge joint winners

Left: The Free Nation of Venezia by industrygothica
Right: La 31ème île d'Inktober by ThomasR

Today we're starting a new style of blog post. It'll be a mostly(!) weekly update with a round-up of what's been happening at the Guild over the previous seven days. If you're absent for some time, and there are too many threads to read through, this is an easy way to catch up.

    So let's dive in!

    Guild News:

Our newest community project 'Guild Dungeon' is going well and has produced some great maps already. Check out all the mapping threads here. Keep an eye on Redrobes' giant map, where he's assembling all the pieces.

    Challenge News:

    Lite Challenge
The Oct/Nov 2017 Lite challenge was 'Map an Island - Pick a Shape'. Bogie provided four island shapes and encouraged mappers to go wild with them.

We had a tie at the top, so two silver compasses were dispensed this month. Our congrats go to IndustryGothica with map 'The Free Nation of Venezia' and ThomasR with 'La 31ème île d'Inktober'.

Honourable mention to runner up jshoer for map 'Salvayke'.

The Nov/Dec challenge is 'Map a Farm or Ranch'. More info here.

    Regular Challenge

November's challenge 'Survive!' finishes on Thu 30th Nov, so finish up and get those maps submitted! Polling will likely start late Thursday or Friday, and will run for three days.

    Five Finished Maps:

Five hot maps posted over the past week.

    1. Tick Tary Tanner's Magnificent Mansion by FrancescaBaerald
    2. Kingdom of Rahn by Gonzotron
    3. The Flat Planet by Francissimo
    4. Yndaros - Commission for Järnringen by Obbehobbe
    5. Themystra by ThomasR

    Five threads to check out:

The latest work-in-progress threads, interesting discussions, new tutorials etc etc. It's all here.

    1. Several members are participating in #Mapvember2017. Most threads are in the General and Miscellaneous Mapping folder, so have a browse there. Don't miss DanielHasenbos, Blaidd Drwg & Dyson Logos' threads for regular updates. If you have no idea what Mapvember is, here's some background.
    2. Vorropohaiah posted his latest Atlas Elyden piece: N'rach.
    3. Meshon's working on "A little collaboration project" with some others.
    4. Robbie, our admin, is developing a mystery game based on a Kirkbride style Insane Asylum Foorplan.
    5. Tom's working on 'The Forgotten Balath Dungeon', where he is "planning to design, drawn and write some rpg adventures settled in the Heimur world"

Love this ! This is superb for me. I tend to read a limited set of threads based on stuff like moderated, guild dungeon, support threads etc and I usually miss some of the important stuff going on. Having a list of some hot topics this week is really cool. And I do like the external map links too. If I come across any then ill PM them to you.
