• Weekly Round-up - 4th December, 2017

    Safrân by Ilanthar

Here's our weekly roundup on what's been happening at the Guild over the last seven days.

    Guild News

    On the Map
We have a new On the Map interview, just published. This month our victim is Brian van Hunsel, better known round these parts as Blaidd Drwg. We've all enjoyed Brian's recent Mapvember work, so check out his story.

    Guild Dungeon
Mappers continue to work on their dungeon maps, and if you'd like to join in, head for this folder and start a thread. if you have questions, ask 'em here.

Redrobes has put together the first zoomy map showing all dungeon maps completed so far. Set your browser full screen, and zoom right in for best effect.

    Guild City & Guild World
Our other community projects are still ongoing and we've had a couple of updates recently.

Azelor posted two updates: White Hill (Guild City), and The Kingdom in the clouds (Guild World). Both are beautiful, detailed maps, well worth a look.

J.Edward started a 'Where we are now' thread for Guild city, showing empty spots and current development for each area. If you want to map a small part of a city, there are still plenty of areas free. Head for J.Ed's thread and claim your spot. Redrobes recently updated the zoomy map to show the current status of the city.

    Challenge News

    Regular Challenge
November's regular challenge (suggested by Wingshaw) was 'Survive!'. Voting's currently underway, so head for the poll and pick your favourites. Voting ends on Wed 6th Dec.

    Lite Challenge
Our November/December 17 Lite Challenge is 'Map a Farm or Ranch'. It's running till mid-December, so there's still time to join in.

    Challenge Suggestions
We're always interested to read suggestions for future challenges. If you've got one, post it here. There are some good ones there already, so have a browse through the threads. Remember to vote and comment on the ones you like.

    Atlas Awards 2018

The end of the year is drawing closer, so we'd like to remind everyone of the main rule for eligibility for Atlas Awards nominations. Your map MUST be posted in Finished Maps before the end of 2017.

For example, if you created a map for a challenge, or for Guild World/Guild City, unless you posted it in Finished Maps, it will NOT be eligible for nomination.

If you've got any maps you're particularly proud of that aren't already posted in Finished Maps, start a thread and repost them there. Make sure you do it before 31st December.

We'll write more about the 2018 Awards again when we're getting ready to start.

    Around the web

Some links for your reading/viewing pleasure.

    1. A couple of vids of traditional media mappers at work. Watch a short time lapse video of artist Isaac Stewart painting the map found on the inside dust jacket of Brandon Sanderson's Oathbringer. Digital version of the map can be seen here. And check out "Sketching the Slopes: The Artist Behind Ski Trail Maps" showing artist Jim Niehues at work.
    2. Looking for that perfect gift for the mapper in your life? How about a Renaissance ‘imaginary cities’ manuscript? Bids start at $90K, so have a hunt down the back of your couch for some spare change.
    3. Not mapping, but if you like sci-fi/fantasy and you don't mind ebooks, Humble Bundle are doing a deal right now. Your purchase supports charity too. Time's running out though, as the offer ends in a couple of days.
    4. The etymology of [UK] river names... "Dark water, yew trees and bears: we explore the origins of ancient river names.". And, unrelated, here's a little map of how UK peeps name their waterways. Don't confuse your Allts with your Becks or your Nants.

    And finally

A little factoid, absolutely nothing to do with mapping....

Belphegor's prime is 1,000,000,000,000,066,600,000,000,000,001: a palindromic prime number with 666 in the middle and 13 0s on either side. It is named after Belphegor, one of the seven princes of hell.
