  • Weekly Round-up - 28th May, 2018

  1. Welcome!

The Cartographers’ Guild is a forum created by and for map makers and aficionados, a place where every aspect of cartography can be admired, examined, learned, and discussed. Our membership consists of professional designers and artists, hobbyists, and amateurs—all are welcome to join and participate in the quest for cartographic skill and knowledge.

Although we specialize in maps of fictional realms, as commonly used in both novels and games (both tabletop and role-playing), many Guild members are also proficient in historical and contemporary maps. Likewise, we specialize in computer-assisted cartography (such as with GIMP, Adobe apps, Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, etc.), although many members here also have interest in maps drafted by hand.

If this is your first visit, be sure to check out the FAQ. You will have to register before you can post or view full size images in the forums.

Welcome to the weekly round-up, a summary of what’s happened at the Guild over the past seven days.

    Challenge News

May 2018 Challenge : Create a set of stamps

There are only three days remaining, at the time of publishing, for May's regular challenge, so finish up and submit your entries. We've got some gorgeous and creative entries, and you can see them all here.

May / June 2018 Lite Challenge: The Fast, Free and Crazy Challenge!

It's a free-for-all in the Lite Challenge this month, but take note that it's finishing earlier than usual (10th June). There's still loads of time to enter so if you've got an itch to make a map, and fancy a silver compass too, submit your entries here.

    Around the web

Some links for your reading/viewing pleasure.

‘The Earth is, in fact, round’, blog post from the British Library
'Kotisaari Island In Finland Through The Seasons'. This link has photographs, rather than maps, but it might serve as a nice inspiration for seasonal variations.
After last week's Abraham Ortelius Google Doodle, there are a couple of articles about him published this week: 'Abraham Ortelius: Why His Maps Included Images of Sea Monsters' and 'This Map of Iceland Has it All!'
'Boats and Maps', from The Bodleian's Map Room Blog
From the University of Sheffield, a web app that displays the landforms left behind by the ice sheet that covered most of Britain and Ireland during the last ice age. (covers UK & Ireland only)
From LOC, 'Extremities of the Earth: The Northernmost Inhabited Point'
From Switzerland's Society for Cartography, a collection of their 'Map of the week' posts.
Via Map Mania, check out 'The Virtual Globes Museum'
From CityLab, 'The World's 15 Most Complex Subway Maps', as ranked by a research team of mathematicians and theoretical physicists.
From The Atlantic, 'Most Maps of the New Ebola Outbreak Are Wrong'. How incorrect mapping can endanger lives.
If you're looking for some new fantasy novels to read, Unbound Worlds have rated (in their opinion) 'The 100 Best Fantasy Novels of All Time'

    Some mapping eye candy...

Via Reddit, 'Japan from Siberia 1943'
Via LOCMaps, 'This majestic #panoramic map colorfully depicts the #PalmBeach area of the #Florida coast!'
Also from LOCMaps, a mashup of fairy tale characters, myths, and legends represented in this cloth #map of "Fairyland"
From Harvard Map Collection, 1914 map of St. Petersburg
'a fabulous embroidered/appliquéd map of Northumberland National Park'. I liked the bat!
