  • Weekly Round-up - 30th July, 2018

  1. Welcome!

The Cartographers’ Guild is a forum created by and for map makers and aficionados, a place where every aspect of cartography can be admired, examined, learned, and discussed. Our membership consists of professional designers and artists, hobbyists, and amateurs—all are welcome to join and participate in the quest for cartographic skill and knowledge.

Although we specialize in maps of fictional realms, as commonly used in both novels and games (both tabletop and role-playing), many Guild members are also proficient in historical and contemporary maps. Likewise, we specialize in computer-assisted cartography (such as with GIMP, Adobe apps, Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, etc.), although many members here also have interest in maps drafted by hand.

If this is your first visit, be sure to check out the FAQ. You will have to register before you can post or view full size images in the forums.

    Roland's Journey, by aeshnidae
Winner of the June/July 2018 Lite Challenge

Welcome to the weekly round-up, a summary of what’s happened at the Guild over the past seven days.

    Challenge News

June/July 2018 Lite Challenge : Map a trip or journey

Congratulations to aeshnidae for winning the Lite Challenge with map 'Roland's Journey', inspired by Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Aeshnidae wins her second silver compass. Check out the WIP thread here.

Honourable mention to runner up AlfansosRevenge for map 'Apollo 11 Flight Profile'.

    July/August 2018 Lite Challenge : Opposing Seasons

Our latest Lite Challenge, running till mid-August is 'Opposing Seasons'. Bogie writes...

This month's Challenge is to create a map in 2 versions. You can map anything you want, a river scene, a farm, a castle, a mountain valley, a coastal island, a town, a country, anything, it is your choice as long as you make 2 versions in opposite seasons, Winter and Summer, or Spring and Fall. I guess the prime restriction is that what ever you map has to have seasons. A dwarven mine looks pretty much the same in spring and fall so not a good choice.

If you have questions, head for the Intro thread. Check out the current entries here.

July 2018 Challenge : Son of the Fantasy Random Generator

At the time of publishing, there's about a day left to finish up and submit your final entry, so get cracking! This challenge is always popular, and it's great to see so many entries once again (19 maps!) Thanks to all who entered, and good luck to everyone when voting starts. Keep an eye out for Diamond's post with the poll.

You can see all the entries here.

I quite liked the comparative lakes map
The Rhodes and American Airlines maps were nice too.
Really liked the NYC maps. I used to live 15 minutes outside the city.
The Bronx Parkway map is splendid. Shows Harriman where I used to go hiking on weekends.
A 30 min drive from where i lived in NJ. I miss that.
Thanks as always for these ChickPea

Yey ! I'm glad you had a summer break, ChickPea, but I can't prevent myself to enjoy the return of Weekly Round-up ! Thanks for it !!
(Sorry if it's a stupid asking, but is there a way to be warned when a new one is published ? Like a mailing list of a sort of notification ?)

      Thanks for the comments, guys!

Misty, there isn't any sort of mailing list for the weekly posts. If you use RSS, there's a feed you can subscribe to, but if not, just keep an eye on the home page every Monday. I set them to publish at 8.15am (UK time) on a Monday morning. There's also a post in the Activity Stream, though that will only show for a little while, depending on the number of other posts.
