  • Weekly Round-up - 1st October, 2018

  1. Welcome!

The Cartographers’ Guild is a forum created by and for map makers and aficionados, a place where every aspect of cartography can be admired, examined, learned, and discussed. Our membership consists of professional designers and artists, hobbyists, and amateurs—all are welcome to join and participate in the quest for cartographic skill and knowledge.

Although we specialize in maps of fictional realms, as commonly used in both novels and games (both tabletop and role-playing), many Guild members are also proficient in historical and contemporary maps. Likewise, we specialize in computer-assisted cartography (such as with GIMP, Adobe apps, Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, etc.), although many members here also have interest in maps drafted by hand.

If this is your first visit, be sure to check out the FAQ. You will have to register before you can post or view full size images in the forums.

Welcome to the weekly round-up, a summary of what’s happened at the Guild over the past seven days.

    Challenge News

September 2018 challenge : Stairway to Heaven

Voting will be starting very soon for September's challenge, so keep an eye on the challenge folder for the announcement.

Sept/October 2018 Lite Challenge : Map a location from a Harry Potter Movie

Our Lite Challenge is inspired by everyone's second favourite* wizard, Harry Potter. The challenge runs till mid-October, so there's still plenty of time to join in, and we've got some great maps already. Take a look at the current entries here, and if you have questions, ask them in the intro thread.

    Mapping Challenge Suggestions

We've had another great challenge suggestion, courtesy of MapMappingMapped...

Map the ruins of a lost city/fortress

Palenque, Angkor Wat, Petra, Machu Pichu... All these relics of times gone by make us gasp in awe and wonder. Who made them? Where are the inhabitants today? Why are they abandoned?
All these questions can fit straight into a fantasy world - and a map. So what about it? Drawing a city is one thing, but drawing its remnants is another. Me, I think it'll be hugely interesting for a challenge!
We could also twist things here and there - a depiction of the ruins at its height, a timeline, and so on. We'll have to decide if we do historical or fictional ruins, or both. Either ways, it'll be fun!

If you like the idea, go vote for it here.

If you have an idea for a challenge, feel free to start a thread with a poll in the Challenge Suggestions folder, and tell us about it.
