More work on Xamel Regional Map

I got to the end of Pt. 2 of RobA's tutorial, "Using GIMP to Create an Artistic Regional RPG Map" but I wasn't happy with how the mountains looked. I found another tutorial by RobA, "Simple Mountains in GIMP" and decided to use that technique instead.
Here is my first pass at the alternate technique:
I thought the mountains turned out pretty good, though there was a strange inverted ridge around the mountains that I couldn't get rid of. Also, the forests looked strange--not as good as the previous attempt. So I decided to try one more time before moving on. Here is my second pass:
I think you can see a big difference. I'm very happy with how this one turned out. So I'll continue on with the tutorial using this to move forward.
