Preliminary Note: The city itself is only 7 inches long and completely hand drawn
The idea is simple: a sacred water source with generative powers (various entities emerge from the water and must be protect in the sites around the central spring's lake) is the nexus of a city. Not only is the surrounding landscape desert and the water is important to survive, but the generative powers cannot be allowed to enter the hands of others.... This blog post contains some of my thoughts as I put it together.
The COMPLETE (for now) City
Stages in the composition process and my rationale
1) As with my previous maps in my moleskin (album) , I decided to use insets to highlight in more detail particular buildings. In this case, important holy sites near the spring's lake. The insets appeared useful and the lines pointing to the relevant area sufficiently thin to not obscure later city blocks. I feel like the solid lines ended up being a mistake. Unlike my previous map where a commented pointed out it was sort of hard to see the creek, I ended up adding blue to clarify that element. I also made the elevation lines (a small gully where the creek flows and the basin with the spring's lake more overt.
2) I immediately discovered that the inset lines obscured the city blocks. I will fix this in later maps. Please let me know in the comments how I could fix this! (pencil marks indicate the major areas for the plazas)
3) Here the inset lines obscuring the blocks are easier to see. However, I was proud of the shape of the plaza to the west!
