Hey there! Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in, but I am looking to commission a beautiful, hand-drawn map for a birthday present. I would love it to look older in style- as if it is an antique map. The area is in Pennsylvania.. mountains, rivers...I have found one example of a map online that I can share with you, but I would love to get an artist-made map. I would love to see samples of your work, and I can pay up to $100. Please message me if interested- looking forward to looking at maps you've already drawn!

Hey I hope you guys don't think I am an apostate haha, but I draw my maps and a lot of the details on them then digitalise them with a high definition A3 Scanner then add digitalised details like text and colour for the sake of neatness. Check out some of my maps. I was just looking to see if anyone uses a similar method of mixing hand drawn and digital to produce maps?

    Thanks

In my personal opinion as long as the original coastlines, forests, mountains and drawing etc, is in ink or pencil it passes, touch ups are simply fixing minor mistakes made by the hand.

Hi there, I'm new. I like the idea of handmade maps.

I learned mapping the analog way. We used rotring isographic pens, ruling pens and contour pens held perfectly upright. To draw straight lines we used the sharp side of a triangle (not sloped side) positioned below a steel ruler to measure and accurately draw straight lines with a ruling pen or contour pen.

I have little experience in fancy antique mapping lettering styles like some other members in this group so I figure we could trace over antique map fonts, check out antique calligraphy techniques, graphic design typography spacing and collect and embed antique and vintage examples of pictorial maps in our gallery, and soon we will be able to accomplish some exciting outcomes. Cheers Antonia.

Here's a link to an interesting collection of vintage hand drawn pictorial maps:

Hi Everyone, looks like I found the group I need.

Very new to all this and currently using the bigger threads to post but will now start adding here as well.

Good article recommendation Antonia. Not at all what I was expecting, the Moon wins it for me!

Interesting idea on the letter/calligraphy, its a major weakness of mine along with pretty much everything else except Coastlines and mountains. If I get the time I will feedback on it.

Hi, looks like I found my ideal group.
To be honest, to do the actual mapping I prefer to do it manually, however GIMP2 lets you have different layers so I usually map with it.
For the designs though, I mostly use pen and paper.
