Welcome!
The Cartographers’ Guild is a forum created by and for map makers and aficionados, a place where every aspect of cartography can be admired, examined, learned, and discussed. Our membership consists of professional designers and artists, hobbyists, and amateurs—all are welcome to join and participate in the quest for cartographic skill and knowledge.
Although we specialize in maps of fictional realms, as commonly used in both novels and games (both tabletop and role-playing), many Guild members are also proficient in historical and contemporary maps. Likewise, we specialize in computer-assisted cartography (such as with GIMP, Adobe apps, Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, etc.), although many members here also have interest in maps drafted by hand.

I've taken the liberty of uploading the first couple of images to our new album. For myself I have decided to upload two versions of each completed map - with, and without the sheet effects on. I do understand, however, that this will be a personal choice for each new member to make for themselves. I just think it will make the album more interesting to look at Load away...
Hopefully I will be online tomorrow. I have quite a few.that might bake noodles :-D
Oh yeah. We'd better be a bit careful with the server switch. Don't want to upset what Robbie's doing sometime this weekend by being in the middle of uploading a whole bundle of graphics while he's trying to move everything!
Hiya! What a difference "sheets" make! (Still don't quite understand what they are or how they work, but... Wow!) That's gorgeous. Oh, I see Merelan! Are you going to be mapping multiple (or all) locations for your world?
Thanks Neyjour I'll probably map Urrowan, which is the rambling ruin of an ancient palace that was once the 'Camelot' of Ethran. I'm not sure if I'm going to do any regional maps though. Our Sheets are like your Layers. We can draw objects on them, and move them up or down the stack just like you do with Layers to arrange everything in the right order. We have 25 different effects to add to those Sheets - things like bevel and transparency to name but 2. Any or all of these effects can be applied to any Sheet in the drawing, in any order, and any number of times to get the right appearance for the objects drawn on that Sheet. An effect will modify the appearance of all the polygons drawn on the Sheet in the same way. We have a button that switches all the effects in the file on, or off, a bit like a light switch. These messages are limited to 1000 characters. I think that's just about the shortest summary I can manage to do. I hope it helps
As Mouse points out, the Photoshop cognates to CC3's Sheets would be Layers and the CC3's Sheet Effects would correspond to Layer Styles in Photoshop. Basically, it's a set of dynamic filters that operate on each physical grouping of drawing elements (sheet/layers). If you can see the images, http://forum.profantasy.com/comments...cussionID=5280 shows another example of before and after for sheet effects that I did to demonstrate some of them. It's by no means a "good" drawing, but it demonstrates the idea.
Thanks for the link, waldronate. That's a nice piece of work, and you've just explained one of the effects that I never really understood before @Redrobes When you have a minute to spare, please can you change the name of the group to "Campaigning Cartographers". All who expressed an opinion were in favour
Thanks mouse for the group. I've uploaded some pictures too. This map was made on CC3 and I used a lot the "texture overblend" effect. I spent hours and hours to avoid the repetition effect with the texture, trying to find the right scale... I might have not understood completely CC3, but the scale on the effects parameters was not working, so I had to change the resolution of the texture in GIMP to have the right size of wave or grass... And with CC3, when the effects are "on" and you have lots of layers and effects, the software takes maybe 30 seconds to render the map each time you change something, even when you go up or right or down in the map (as I learned from Mouse, it's no longer the case with CC3+)... So, you learn to be patient...
Hey Jo Great to see Alycrau up on the board ... and it was Redrobes who created the group. I just ran the poll to see if there were enough interested parties I've never used Texture Overblend. I guess we all have our favourite effects. Now I can at least see how useful the overblend is. What a remarkable difference between effects on, and effects off. Its almost more of a contrast than it is with Ethran Making textures work in GIMP - that's ok. I draw my own objects (as you do) in CorelDraw quite frequently, then import them into my user symbol set. Its not a good idea to try and switch from CC3 to CC3+ right in the middle of a map, but I would thoroughly recommend CC3+. Its the hare to the CC3 tortoise where speed is concerned
Greetings. I use CC3+ only for character portraits with CA3, but our group has made two CC3+ add-ons with No. 3 in beta testing, so I'll be watching y'all with hawk's eyes.
