    You'll need to provide a little more context because there are map file types with the extension ".map". A pointer to the file in question might help, if possible.

    Where did you find this "*.map" file ?

    A .map file is not actually a map. It's a file that holds code for an imagemap on a webpage (i.e. when you click different places on the image it goes to different links).

    There are many different kinds of .map files (for example, linker map files, color map files, heightfield data files all can share the .map extension). Without a context, it's impossible to know what this request might be referring to.
