Default August/September 2014 Lite Challenge: Wilburia

Ah yes, more random blobs. I'm sure that I'll get the mountains right, but will lose out to those who apply time and talent to their operation.

Starting with the basic blobs in Photoshop, invert them to get a white for land and black for sea:
    coast.gif
Now scribble some areas for mountains:

In Wilbur, apply the usual multi-scale processing for a coastal mask with mountains and V2 shader:

Do a 3D preview, find a nice view, and take a screenshot:

Crop to just the active elements in Photoshop:

And perspective distort and resize in Photoshop to get the original aspect back:

Now that there's a starting point, it's time to add on other parts to make it more mappy. I'm always a little conflicted between the semi-perspective mountains version that looks a little muddy due limited resolution and the straight version that's a lot cleaner, but lacks the pop of the semi-perspective elements. Maybe I need to tweak Wilbur to output higher-resolution images than just a screenshot.

I've been looking at the original and think that a straight overhead view might be better. Certainly there are better shaders than that one. I'm thinking that a straight monochrome version might be better here. The original image was prettier (6k by 6k), but I think this gets the idea across. It's a combination of a lighted at 45 degrees elevation layer, a lighted at 90 degrees elevation layer, and an ambient occlusion layer with an outlined river layer on top.

And apparently I did indeed forget to put the challenge information in the thread title. Reading instructions has never been my best skill, that's for sure!

This is why I don't label things. Lots of effort...

Fixed your title for ya. Also, you've got two Brown Rivers.

One day, oh one day, I will learn Wilbur... this looks pretty fantastic.

We turn now to Terry Pratchett for a description of a young man setting out to learn Wilbur: "In yet another part of the forest a young [cartographer] was undergoing a very essential part of his training. He had eaten of the sacred toadstool, he had smoked the holy rhizome, he had carefully powdered up and inserted into various orifices the mystic mushroom and now, sitting crosslegged [before a glowing monitor], he was concentrating firstly on making contact with the strange and wonderful secrets at the heart of [Wilbur] but mainly on stopping the top of his head from unscrewing and floating away.
Blue four-side triangles pinwheeled across his vision. Occasionally he smiled knowingly at nothing very much and said things like 'Wow' and 'Urgh.'
There was a movement in the air and what he later described as 'like, a sort of explosion only backwards, you know?', and suddenly where there had only been nothing there was a large, battered, " terrain.

Thank you. I also have a whole lot of "City" on the map. I needed all of the muddy, warm end of the spectrum to empty into the Muddy Sea. I'll send out the pollution control squad to that other Brown River right away!
