Default Feb / Mar '18 Lite Challenge: Broax Island

Just decided to jump right in. I wanted to experiment with the coast line doing those little flourishes. And I decided to revisit the painted ocean style from my unfinished Eglephron map.

Absolutely no idea what I plan on doing for the interior.

The idea I'm going is is that this is a large island (somewhere around the size of Iceland or Ireland) with dwarven colonies settling or settled in it. Partly since I'd like to do some under canals and under roads as a test idea. And basically be another set piece in the same world as my other dwarf stuff.

I really like the coloration, and the lineart appears very fluid to me.

The sea colouring is excellent. Very dramatic!

Great water color, it reminds me of when they draw the Gulf Stream & the Pacific Current.

    Thanks for joining the Challenge!

So I've been experimenting with semi-iso mountains ideas and none of them feel really suitable for this map. So I'm going to try and sort of paint a height map maybe? Not really sure. So, in short, absolutely no advancement has been made

I agree. Style 3 (and 4) fit the painterly style that you've established with your ocean coloring.

Yes, mountain styles 3 and 4 are very fitting. The ocean coloring is gorgeous!

    Thank you guys.

I'm not sure now why I didn't like the mountains of 3 and 4. Maybe I didn't sit on them long enough or develop them far enough, because now I kind of like them again. But as you can see I went in a totally different direction. C'est la vie.

And the light direction is somthing like this:
    Light Direction.png
Although I started with thinking of a light directly from the East, so there is some unintended inconstancy. To me, the mountains seem too dense and not branchy enough so next on the agenda is working on trying to fix that. Then I'll also tone down the other parts to make it over all less wavy. I tried a different technique in the middle right of the map where I defined the valleys first instead of the peaks, but it wasn't as successful, largely cause I still didn't really understand what I was doing then.
