    Map The Shire

    Hi!

Here's the second map a passionate collector of Tolkien related art commissioned to me.
Some of you may have already seen this map on my Facebook page together with some work in progress.

I wanted it to be colourful and alive. I hope I have managed to obtain that effect

As usual it's done with watercolour and ink on paper.

Beautiful work, as always ! The frame (though wonderful) with the two trees is maybe a bit overpowered, it distracted me a bit from the map itself.

Also, as to Max's comment I don't necessarily think the border is overpowering, but I think it would have worked a tiny bit better if the outer parts of the frame were either significantly darker or lighter than the main map. But that's only a really slight nitpick to another really fine piece!

Beautiful once again, Francesca! The border is amazing! I do not think it is overpowering. I've been staring at the border for ten minutes and I'm still fascinated by it and finding new stuff. I love the robins and hobbits in the tree, the rabbit on hobbit hill, the ponies, Gandalf in his cart, the Old Mill and Ted Sandyman. I don't know how you do it!

    And Falconius, to your question:

Thank you! And I know, I tend to put too many details and give too much importance to the border illustration. It is not easy to find the right balance

Thank you very much GLS! Yes, I could try to differentiate the border from the map using colours. It could be a great solution to the problem, thank you!

Thank you Matthew! Sometimes my borders could be a little bit overwhelming I truly appreciate that you have noticed all the details. I'd like to see my maps more as illustrations with a story to tell. This is why I add too many details!
