Default October 2018 Challenge: Needles Lighthouse

Here's my preliminary sketch, just trying to work out the composition and proportions. I'm going to move the compass to the bottom left corner and shift the lighthouse detail and titles left. Don't know how I feel about the cursive bay titles. My calligraphy fu is weak.

    Thanks Larb.

I chose the Lighthouse image to map. I liked the shapes and colors. Turns out that it is the Needles Lighthouse on the Isle of Wight. (Side note: that peninsula looks kind of like a shark with its mouth open to me...) I'm trying to be relatively faithful to reality, but I'll definitely make the coastline a bit less linear so it's more visually interesting.

Nice start and nice topic. Isn't there a kayak race around there every year? I took part in one around Drake's Island near Plymouth once. It was good fun if a little scary at times.

No idea. I hail from New England as opposed to Olde England. I'm familiar with the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston though!

I'll add my location to my profile whenever I unlock the ability to edit it.

    Welcome to the challenge!

Didn't realise the lighthouse was on the Isle of Wight, though I did notice the 'white cliffs of Dover' look about it (but I'm sure many places in the world have that look). Your sketch is looking great, and I'm looking forward to your update. And yeah, I can't unsee the shark either lol!

Thanks ChickPea. Here's a useless factoid for the day: in 2010 there was as £500,000 project to save the lighthouse from getting swallowed by the sea.

I'm trying to sort through a technical issue at the moment. I'd like to mask off the lighthouse inset to make doing a wash across the ocean area a lot easier. I currently have an experiment involving rubber cement underway. The fumes though, bah. If that fails, tape and a razor blade I guess.

They make liquid frisket for temporarily masking areas.
I had some once, but it died in the bottle before I got to really play with it.
    Sheet frisket is also available.

If this fails, I may try some of that masking fluid. Didn't really want to spring for a bottle when I've never needed it before. I'm sure it would come in handy again though.

On the bright side, the test is looking promising. Here's some pics of the masked off area with dried rubber cement, then with masking removed it has nice crisp edges, and finally with some French Ultramarine spread across the whole area. Now to let the paint dry, remove the cement, and hope it doesn't leave a residue.
