    Map Mus Murinae, sci-fi HUD

My completed map for the March-April 2018 Lite Challenge, “Map Guildworld.” This is a total departure from my normal style but the concept of a sci-fi HUD popped into my brain and wouldn’t leave. This is my first sci-fi map and the first map I’ve created that did not start with pencil and paper. Everything was done in Photoshop. However, everything except the galaxy (which came from NASA's public images) and the beginning on the moon (which started as a photo of a slice of Swiss cheese) was drawn by hand using a Wacom Intuos tablet, then manipulated further in Photoshop. The font is Montalban, available from dafont.com.

This map is inspired in part by Star Trek:TNG's LCARS (the interface) and in part by the Viper cockpit screen from Battlestar Galactica (the color palette). Much of the text on the left side is a nod to the Cartographer's Guild website, including its menus and site leaders.

    WIP thread is here.

This is definitely going to get a nomination for next year's Atlas Awards. Beautiful, clear, logical map with a great color scheme and a nice layout that never feels cramped.

I'm totally flabbergasted and may have actually made a "squee!" noise. To have one of my maps even mentioned in the same sentence as Atlas Awards is amazing, thank you!

Thanks! I appreciate you being my very first (and possibly only) constellation.

This is some quality stuff. Nicely done and clean. I like the crane splatted into the north pole I totally see it!

    Also, regarding the cheese photo:

A perfect example of what should look like a sci-fi map, at least in my mind : the colors and organisation are perfect and I love the planet map for many details : really well done !

    Speaking of 'Squee!' and cheese...

I had some fresh cheese curds last weekend.
You can tell how fresh they are by how they
squeak on your teeth when you chew them.
The ones we had were at least a day old.
