    Hello Cartographers,
i am new to making maps and want to start with the biggest dimension possible so i am making a world map. i would like to start with tectonics to figure out the plates and their relation to each other. i can do this but i dont know what size to make it. i have heard that a world map is supposed to be twice as wide as it is tall is that correct? i do not know how to break down the world into a believable 2d image. i am currently working with Photoshop cs3.

Basically what i am asking is what dimensions is an earth like map, height and width?

Depends on which projection you want to use.

But for world maps the equirectangular projection is indeed the most common, since it's easy to convert into other projections if necessary. And the equirectangular projection does have 2:1 width: height ratio.

Yes that is the recommended projection to use unless you are doing something specific were another projection will do a better job.
