    Default Mushrooms for the Masses

I actually went through a couple of ideas - even drew one out before changing my mind. Initially I was going to do a lava-powered furnace and workshop.

INSTEAD I thought well - a dungeon should have a proper ecology and everyone needs to eat. So I went with the one thing near and dear to my heart - an underground mushroom farm and mushroom brewery.

Just got the basics down for now.

What sort of thing do they brew?
I'm not familiar with any mushroom alcohols, or drinks of any kind, for that matter.
Are there any myconid workers? or would be sort of strange, maybe?

Out of curiosity Larb, do you actually work with toadstools irl?

Octen-3-ol is known as mushroom alcohol. It is also a by-product of mushroom preparation waste. It's not the sort of stuff you'd want to be drinking neat though as it's classified as category 4 oral toxicity.

I thought you were kdding there but no this is a thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1-Octen-3-ol

I like this bit: Octenol is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a food additive. It is of moderate toxicity with an LD 50 of 340 mg/kg - Swell !

As far as I know you can't practically create an alcoholic beverage from them without adding other things due to the low carbohydrate content, at which point you're really making it from the other things with the mushrooms for flavour. But fantasy fungus can have specific properties to make it possible!

I hadn't really considered what specific denizens the place might have. Mostly I just like dungeons to have some sort of basic ecology and food is always important so I went with that. Waldronate's comment does lead to another idea someone might want to use though - where do the denizens dump all the waste and rubbish?

Sadly there aren't many jobs in Mycology.

In the mushroom farm! Mushrooms aren't primary producers, after all. They need to break down some energy source to grow their main body to a certain size, then they need to get all excited and produce the reproductive organs that other life forms like to eat. There is a reason that myconids don't have noses, after all!

The very not-nice part from the PC perspective is the sign at the entryway that says "Myconid Nursery" in Myconid, "Mushroom Farm" in Common, and "Restroom" in various humanoid languages.

I'll stop before I'm awarded the wagging finger badge for excessively suggestive posting.

Looking good. Incidentally, I myself just recently created the mushroom cavern of a mega-dungeon I'm building for my own homebrew campaign. Must be something in the air.
