Default Upcoming upgrade and server maintenance/changes.

We now have a license for vbulletin 5 and I would like to do some testing of it in private first. This should all happen relatively unnoticed for most of you except for a few server reboots as I prepare everything.

One of the big changes I'd like to make is to implement virtual servers for test environments and staging as well as improving the sites backup ability. Being able to roll a virtual server back to a previous state when I mess something up would be great!

I'm not sure on an actual date/time for all of this to take place, I'm still reading about it and figuring out what all the steps are going to be. If anyone has any experience with virtualization and would like to help or talk me out of it please do. I'm currently thinking qemu-kvm for Ubuntu.

Me too! I've been very very happy with how well the new server has performed this far, but I'm always worrying I'm a day away from catastrophe, lol. Virtualization will make recovery from catastrophe much easier.

An IT guy once told me "We're a day away from catastrophe and my job is to keep it there." I was never clear if he meant that he was trying to keep the infrastructure working or if he was trying to keep himself employed, though.

Haha, it match my philosophy. Maintaining a PC, so that all works retalively well is tough one. It can all go to #&@#!@# anytime, so i know that the catastrophe is coming and just want to keep it at bay

I'm sure you're already doing them, but I couldn't resist mentioning that...
Backups are a Good Thing (tm). In addition to protecting against typos while doing maintenance, they can help protect against malware, including ransomware.
Keeping some backups off-site is an improvement, protecting against fire, flood and theft.

Got the backups covered, not quite an automated process yet but almost.

For us, I'm hoping that catastrophe would only be some downtime.

I'm going to attempt to do a test upgrade to vb5 this weekend. This will happen completely in the background on a test site and shouldn't affect the live site at all but just in case it does somehow I'm dropping a note here.
