Try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_placename_etymology
or this: http://www.genealogyandhow.com/lib/g...e-meanings.htm
to get some ideas.
Or just use a lot of umlauts

Please, don't! If you start combining random words together in a language you don't understand, you run the risk of accidentally coming up with rather offensive/overly stupid names.
One of my classmates is from Japan, and one of his friends created an "English" world, with "English style names". One of the highlights I can remember:
Lake-upon-pond (It was at the top of a mountain)
The other 'good ones' would likely get me banned from the forums. (But many involved a misunderstanding on a few English words, the majority of them referencing a rooster. He just liked how that word sounded apparently.)
Yet another idea is find a german to english (or reverse) translator and look up the words you want to use and mash them together however suits your fancy.
That's what I did on my Istria map (which I need to wrap up), except I used Tagalog.

Hello,
I posted a name generator written in VB2005 a few weeks ago for english and german city names. It combines a pre- and a suffix, like e.g. Stein-brück. You can also expand the text files. By the time the list growed, I can send you the updated files if you like.

Oh wow!
Please tell me more

I hope this was not ironic
Here is the actual version. I also added the Open Office Sheet with the names. Very useful to find doubles. Just save each sheet as a *.csv (*.txt) and add the number of items at the beginning. Of course the program can create combinations that don't make sense, but it was just an hour efford to write it.
Finding typical prefixes is difficult, I used names of trees, animals, minerals, numbers etc. You can also use the name of rivers, local nobles, gods etc. as a prefix.
Another possibility is to use two words, e.g. Burg XXX (castle) or Feste XXX (small castle).
I used the program for the attached map, which is not finished yet, but it was very helpful when finding lots of names.
