    Default October/November Entry : Abbey of Saint-Margaret

Wanted to get something done to get my ass in gear for this one. I think this is pretty apparent from my previous map entry what I would tackle. I know we are supposed to do only one map but I want to do it justice and complete all floors. I'll worry about presentation when I'm done with each floor. Trying to keep it in the realm of the same style as my previous submission. Starting off with the roof and working my way down. Ground level outside isn't complete nor have decided if I wanna include the stables next door in this map. Any input is appreciated.

Update #1: Worked a lot on the shadows, looking to have it look like it's a snapshot taken at sundown. Hoping it isn't overbearing. Also added the tree, unfortunately trees aren't my forte I need to learn how to make them look good. Probably gonna see a lot of revision on the tree.

Update #2: Removed the tree, was irritating me haha. Started on the first floor layout and work. Added the stable roof and interior as well. I know the stables haven't been really worked much they kinda don't mesh with the entirety of the map. Looking for input on the interior texture choice and layout so far. I know I've worked hard on it today, total of 8 hours.

Edit: The second jpeg won't thumbnail I don't know why.

    Edit #2: Got it!

I know it's early days but I figure since you asked I would just toss 0.02 cents in.
I love the texture itself but the grass areas have a tile effect going on that is a bit bothersome. You did say you were not done with that part of the map though so you may already have plans for that.

Is the roof made out of stone bricks? Zoomed in it looks more like bricks than tiles to me. If so you have "bent" bricks along the North/South roof ridges and while I guess it's possible to cut them that way it seems odd. I've done modern roofing during some years of my life but I'm not really up on what the roof of an Abbey should look like. I also would agree that most probably don't really care what the roof looks like so long as the "real map" part is good.

Other than that it's looking good so far.

Yeah I'm figuring the roof would be more as a title page and was thinking about presenting the finished work as a map pack or published product even though it wont be. The grass was just a filler texture for the time being, I have a higher res version of it but I'm not sure if it's too high scale prob need to do some adjustments there. Besides I was thinking about putting my tree in that corner and title block/floor numbering there as well (undecided). You're right about the roof being brick, I thought with enough work it could look more like stone slabs not actual shingles and get away with it. Thanks for the input I'll try and keep an editing eye on those elements.

Update #3: I've been playing around a lot with shadowing and lighting with this type of map recently. Let me know if these windows look realistic/appropriate to this style. The outside is empty and blurred out and again placeholder struggling with the outside.

Nice work. I think the windows look perfect. One thing that would be really cool is if you had a vague outline of god or a cross in the light from the rainbow window (can't remember what they're called).

looks really good - a thing that spring to mind is the access ways to the church, normally you will have a clear path unto the alter - so you'll go through double doors into the weapon chamber and straight on towards a second pair of double doors into the church ship itself. This is to facilitate not only the people using the church, but also coffins for funerals.

I'm not sure if its called the same in english - just translating from the danish word for it ... it is the chamber where visitors deposited their weapons before entering the church itself, so a sort of wardrobe room
