Hard to say anything at the moment. What style will you choose? Perhaps you should skim the tutorial section for Gimp tutorials and follow your favourite one using your continent shape to get familiar with Gimp.
Oh, and welcome to the guild Cartioni!
thank you Katto, i tried some tutorials but i cant seem to follow instructions correctly, i'll keep trying anyway so you know any good tutorials u would recommend for a beginner?

I haven't tried any Gimp tutorials there I use PS. But Rob A's tutorial found here is very famous and a good starting point. If you have any questions or problems with it, jump to the thread and put your question. There are a lot of Gimp users here that will help you
Go for a fancy 3D perspective view. Or something else entirely.

It's a screenshot of the 3D preview in Wilbur. I did a little processing on the initial height field. http://www.ridgenet.net/~jslayton/software.html for the product and tutorials that show how to do that sort of thing.
I'd recommend following along to Butch Curry's Fantasy Cartography with Photoshop tutorial series up on youtube.

Obviously you are using GIMP so you have to figure out a few differences, but he really starts with some basics and helps you learn different features by explaining each of his steps. However, these tutorials initially go through making a town map instead of a world map, but I think a town map is better to start with because its less ambitious, and if you're just starting out with GIMP, you really need to learn some of the basic GIMP stuff. Its what I did for my first map attempt, and I was pretty happy with the results.
Fortunately, Wisemoon adapted some of the first of Butch's tutorials for GIMP users.
