Default Map of a coastal region - Photoshop montage

From reading your notes and comments, I have tried to work those ideas into this map. It is not in the same class as many others I have seen and enjoyed on this site. But, It is the level I'm in just now.

I combined my landscape pictorial map with standard map features.

    Gary

I liked the map. But the uncentered legends in the compass rose is a little weird for my taste. I also thinkl that the coat of arms is a litle big and I really like when maps have scale. But it is a good looking and well thought map. Congratulations =)

    I really like it.

The only nitpick I can find is that it looks a wee bit cluttered.
Maybe you could try reducing the size of the police a bit. And maybe play with their colour a bit, for example, putting the minor location in brown or something...

Yes, I agree. The map looks a bit cluttered. Dont try to put to much information in a map.

I think the map looks cool, I particularly like your hand drawn base sketch, mountains are looking nice and real, landmasses are consistent, good job. I think the slightly cluttered impression might be due to the fact some of the names are a bit hard to read. You have changed some names -like East Ridges - to bold, and that makes stuff more legible. Some of the smaller fonts do not stand out that well. To be honest, with your drawing style, I'd keep the map completely hand-drawn, including names - if you have a decent capital handwriting - and then add color in your editing program.

Thanks for your suggestions, Pruneau. My usual approach is to hand draw the map - often in a pictorial format / a bird's eye view. My handwriting has deteriorated since my days teaching calligraphy. But, I have tried the suggestions of others; so, I will give yours a go as well.

I confess I became tired of messing with it (Photoshop manuals in one hand, other on the mouse - for days) and did not professionally check each text on the map. I should have as I am a perfectionist wannabe. :-)

    Regards,
    Gary
