My first map. This forum/section seemed like a good place to try the medium out.

2. Are you literally drawing the same thing twice? I'm not sure exactly what it is, actually.

3. You may want to take a look not only at the brief for this particular challenge, but this thread as well. As it is now, your image doesn't show up in the thumb scraper, and no one will be able to see it when voting time rolls around.

This is looking really cool. You may want to make the two maps different somehow, as that's part of the challenge, but maybe you are already planning to do that. Great job on the piece so far.

I was thinking of: political map (borders) and city/ruler illustrations for one side, toponyms and natural feature illustrations for the other side. It would have to wait till the mountains and woods are finished.

I'm not sure exactly what it is, actually.

It does not refer to any other works if that's what you mean. Island with the usual fantasy fluff. Very light grey is land, very very light grey is sea. Black is also land, maybe it is black and featureless because it is very very evil and no-one goes there.

Progress for last 2 days (not much, since I kept going back and forth with decisions, such as whether to go for the gothic-nonsense-script or English)
