Default November 2013 Entry - Kiserlet

Seems a shame nobody (?) is tackling this with the G.Projector software that inspired it. I always wanted to turn one of my worlds into a physical globe ... since one can't recycle an existing map I decided to just spin up a simple world and experiment with how an interrupted sinusoidal might paste up into a ball.

    So.

That's just bring up Fractal Terrains, tweak the altitude colors, next world, next world, next world, next world, next world, next world, next world, oh there's a nice one. Edit, edit, edit, edit, edit, edit. Cool - good enough.

Then download G.Projector from NASA... slurp in the equirectangular... dial the sinusoidal interrupted to 30-degree gores, spit out the result.

Slurp that into my preferred graphics axe, Serif PhotoPlus. Lay in a few ocean names just for grins.

Next - print & find a pair of scissors. In case you can't tell I'm focused on the artifact, not the flat bits leading up to it :-).

Excellent! But I'll still experiment :-)....

sure, it can fit on one 8.5 x 11 page... but should it? Bigger might be easier to handle.

along about here, I'm thinking "doing this freehand, with no support, may be silly".

Yeah - taping things together midair is a fiasco. We needs a substrate, we does. My kids are about to be missing a ball or two :-). I'm also suspecting once I have something to glue to, there'll be no reason to keep it one piece - a dozen separate gores would work better. Maybe.

I'm making this up as I go, can you tell?

Yeah, you might need a ball for that… I used a polystyrene sphere for mine, but unless you have a hobby store nearby it's probably to late for that. I hope you find something else to use, because this looks nice.

Okay - so "the map must be in the form of a globe". While "disassembled to lie flat" should be okay, I'll take that literally and present the poor, lumpy version as my next WIP :-)...
