I have been reading lots of wonderful tutorials, I have seen some great maps, etc. and I just keep wondering what should my first project be. And I keep wondering what are the motivations of the people here to create such great maps (i.e. what do they use them for).

Some are professional cartographers making their living with maps. Some are gamers making maps for their games, or others. Some are scientists interested in representing scientific issues, such as global warming, tectonics, etc. Some are just having fun learning. I'm sure there are as many motivations as members here

For a first project, may I suggest the Lite Challenge in the forum thread of that name.

I will look into it. But at first there has to be some learning on my side :-)

I have some project in my mind but not sure where to post it and get some guidance... I would like to combine a heat map style with a Harry Beck's style map.
