Post Hello and thanks for the add

As a long time RPGer I now want to build my world from scratch.

So I am here to see how you do it.

So for a first question....how do I start? What is the generally preferred software for someone ok with software? I have a Dell computer.

Thanks for the future help and guidance

Hi Erik, welcome to the Guild!

If you go to the Tutorials thread, start with the sticky on "Quickstart Guide to Fantasy Mapping", and then from there to this tutorial: Hand Drawn Mapping (For the Artistically Challenged)

Yo, it depend what you want to do and how much you want to invest. If you want a free program, you should use either try Gimp or Inkscape. Wilbur is also nice: it's kinda experimental but the erosion process is pretty realistic. There are more options if you go with a paid software, here's the complete list: http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=1407

    And this: http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=1033

and you might not even need a software to draw maps. A pencil can do the job just as well.

    Welcome to the guild, Erik!
Yeah, money will restrict what kinds of programs you can obtain, but I've seen maps on this website that were made with (or even without) basic programs, yet they look far nicer than some stuff that you can generate on a really expensive program. That said, I still wish I could have Photoshop xD

Hey, when you feel like it, draw something up for us, and we'd love to critique. We don't bite. (Or do we? Bwhahahaha...no.)
