    Post Hello from New Zealand

    Hello,

Over the past few days I've been making a map of a fantasy city in a weekly Dungeons & Dragons game I'm running. I'm completely new to making maps, but this forum showed up time and time again in my search results with lots of useful information and tutorials so I thought I'd join up to say a general thanks, probably ask a few questions, and hopefully be able to give something back eventually.

Hello Cipscis, welcome to the Guild! I'm sure you'll find all kinds of resources for your game here, but also you'll find all kinds of resources for your own mapmaking, so don't be afraid to get started. We were all completely new to making maps at some point, so you see how far your can go if you want to give it a try yourself.

There is a great tutorial in the sticky section of Tutorials, called Quickstart Guide to Fantasy Mapping: http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=4276

From there, go to Hand Drawn Mapping for the Artistically Challenged: http://www.cartographersguild.com/sh...ad.php?t=10655

Once you have completed those two tutorials, you'll be well on your way!!

Thanks chick, I'd found the quickstart guide already but hadn't seen the hand drawn one so I'll have a look.

    Kia Ora Cipscis!

What part of New Zealand do you hale from? I attended Uni in Auckland for a few years. Didn't meet many Kiwis who played RPGs while I was there but I managed to get a group of new players together and still game with them online at Roll20 every now and then. Anyway, glad you are finding the resources here helpful.

    Cheers,

I went to uni in Auckland as well, and I'm still living there. I only got my introduction to tabletop RPGs when a friend introduced me to Dungeons and Dragons at the start of this year. Then a family friend who'd been playing it to years brought me along to play at a local games store in Ellerslie. Now I'm running a weekly game there and getting excited about building a world for it, including the mapping aspect.

To start with I drew a *very* rough map of a larger region, which I'm sure I'll end up revising significantly as I learn more from here. Over the weekend I made a city map following one of the tutorials from the links chick posted. It took me all day and it's very basic, but I'm happy with how it came out and looking forward to showing my players on Wednesday.

    Hey, another New Zealander; awesome!
    Welcome to the Guild!

That map looks pretty neat so far. If you post this map as a WIP in one of the discussion forums, we'd love to help out

Thanks Corillant, nice to see I'm not the only New Zealander around here. I've made a WIP thread as you suggested: WIP: Fantasy city Sian
