Default Hello! New to the site, what should I know?

Hey guys. New to the boards.

I'm mostly here to improve my photoshop skills. I run a DnD group for my friends, and one of the things I really enjoy is making maps of fictional countries. I've made a handful already, but my only education has been a handful of YouTube videos. So they could stand to improve, a lot.

ATM I'm trying to make an overhead map of a city. I'd love it if I could find a few cool fantasy brushes. Any advice?

Anything I should know about the community?

Hello Frognosticator, Welcome to the Guild!

There is a great tutorial in the sticky section of Tutorials, called Quickstart Guide to Fantasy Mapping: http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=4276

From there, go to Hand Drawn Mapping for the Artistically Challenged: http://www.cartographersguild.com/sh...ad.php?t=10655

Once you have completed those two tutorials, you'll be well on your way to making maps!! There are many other tutorials, including an excellent one on making cities, as well.

Welcome to the Guild Frognosticator! Your in good company, there are many D&D players/map creators here as well. As Chick mentioned, the tutorials section are a great place to start. There are a handful of great Medieval Town and City tutorials written for photoshop here which you can find via a quick search. As to fantasy brushes, check out the Mapping Elements section, I know that certain members have uploaded top-down view houses that can be plugged into a town or city map. Best of luck.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the help guys. I'll check out those resources.

For the curious, here's the third map I've made for my group. This is a map of Neverwinter and the surrounding area, modified heavily to fit the game I'm running (my players have no experience with FR, they don't know the difference). I'm hoping to expand beyond the basics:
