Are there any places where I can get stock images or clipart (not sure what they are called) used to make maps. I am not much of an artist, so I was hoping to find some open source images to use.

Welcome to the Guild GMT. You have come to the right place. We call them Mapping Elements or Mapping Objects.

In case you haven't found it yet we have an entire forum called Mapping Elements. Lots of people have posted mapping artwork in many different styles.
You should check out my thread. It is a lot to wade though, but I have posted hundreds of objects in a nice photorealistic style, in fact most of them are made from photos.

Like the majority of the posts here my mapping objects are free to use for personal use, and commercial use if it is part of a larger map, ( with appropriate credit ). The only restriction is they can't just be packed up and sold as is in an artpack unless you contact me directly.
