Hi, I'm Dallon! I live in Georgia and will be attending college next year to study architecture. I've always loved fantasy stories. Fantasy is probably what made me love maps so much, since I always liked when they had maps in the front. Especially Game of Thrones, I really liked those maps. I've always had a world map on my bedroom wall, and I've loved maps of all kinds for forever. I've never tried making my own before now, though. I'm writing a fantasy story and have been working on a map and while it's coming along ok, I realized two things: one, that I really do not know enough to make a workable map, and two, that making maps is really fun and that it's a hobby that I might like to pursue. I stumbled upon this place when I was googling how far a horse can travel in a day to figure out how far apart to space my settlements and figured that here sounded like a good place to be to learn about cartography, and so here I am!

Hello Dallon, Welcome to the Guild!

To get you started, there is a great tutorial in the sticky section of Tutorials, called
Quickstart Guide to Fantasy Mapping: http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=4276

    From there, go to
Hand Drawn Mapping for the Artistically Challenged: http://www.cartographersguild.com/sh...ad.php?t=10655

Once you have completed those two tutorials, you'll be well on your way!!

And be sure not to miss
How to Get Your Rivers in the Right Place: http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=3822

    and
    The Most Common Reality Errors:

Have fun and I'll look forward to seeing your first map post!

    Welcome to the Guild Dallon.
Architecture and cartography make a really good blend, as one often compliments the other.
I've long studied architecture and building [on my own] as well as done smaller building design, construction and renovation.

The two really go together well. And mapping is just a really fun outlet for creative ideas too.
I look forward to seeing what you produce.
    Cheers,
    John
