    Default The Town of Dullvo

    Hello everyone,

Lately I have been working on this map. I was encouraged to do this map after following the WIP thread of tainotims City of Hills and the style was greatly inspired by the city in Max's map of Vardenia & Urenia. I toyed with the idea of doing a city map for a while but never came any further than quick sketches.

It is the first city map that I have done and it is also the first time I used pen and ink for a map. I'm quite happy with how it turned out, though there are some things I would definitely do different for a next map. One of the major mistakes I made was that I did not plan anything for this map and just went with the flow. In the end I realised I had not drawn any recognizable elements which made labeling feel quite unnatural. Also the drawing style for the grass is not consistent throughout the map. This is because I was not sure what would be the best way and decided to try out some different styles. I'm sure perspective is a bit odd in some places but I think that kind of fits with the map ;p

All with all it was a great learning experience and I really enjoyed doing this map.

The town of Dullvo lies about a days travel from the city of Vandoria (both can be found on another map of mine). The town benfits greatly from its location; Vandoria is an international trade capital and many merchants travel through and often stay in the town of Dullvo, before continueing to Vandoria, either by road or the Sullio River.
The town is also the birthplace of the noble merchant Andrulico Tremaldo, who played a significant part in the Vandorian war for Independence and continued to fulfill several offices in the government of the new Republic of Vandoria for the rest of his life.

(I don't have a A3 scanner so I can only show you this photo of the map)

Any comment, feedback and critique is welcome!

EDIT: I uploaded a tweaked version of the map that J.Edward kindly provided!

Well, you did a wonderful job on this Dan.
Everything looks pretty good to me.
I did a quick adjustment for you - hope that is okay with you.
Just fixed the image warp, adjusted levels and cropped it for you.
    [removed image]
feel free to snag this and reupload if you want.
I used to have to do this a lot until I got a larger scanner myself.
Again, really nice work. Hope to see more.

Nice map, well done. I might suggest some texture on the city walls, but overall it's great

Great work on this Daniel! Having excellent inspiration sources is not enough to get this result, it requires talent!

edit - I can also remove the image after you grab it. Just let me know.
Thanks John, both for the kind words and fixing the image! I uploaded it in the first post, but I don't mind if you leave it here, I think you deserve some credit.

Thanks Chick. I understand what you mean. I have actually tried some textures on the city walls in the first version of the map (when I was halfway done with the first version I accidentally dropped a glass of lemonade over the drawing and had to start over D, but it didn't look good so I decided to leave it as it was.

Thanks ChickPea! I don't know if I'm going to do a coloured version. I have no experience with colouring maps and fear I would be no good at it. I might look up some tutorial for colouring maps but at this point I really can't tell (:

That's okay Dan - I already removed it as I didn't want any confusion.
Maybe I should put together a tutorial for fixing and adjusting photographed work...
as I said, I used to have to do this all the time before I could afford a larger scanner.
If I do, would you mind if I used your map as an example?
It had several classic things that need to be fixed - the angles of the page, the light-to-dark gradient halo and level adjusting.
If not, that's okay too. I can just photo something and do it that way too.

edit - ugh, I just realized that I saved over the original photo. And since you reuploaded I can't snag it to do the editing again for a tut.
So I'll just have to take a pic myself. Doh.

edit2 - If you were looking for advice on techniques for coloring pencil/ink drawings, I went through my process here and in the Bourmout thread.
