    Map Snakewood Novel Map

I did the map for the novel, Snakewood, published by Orbit Books. The brief I got said focus on alchemy symbols. The magic of the world happens mainly from plants and potions. The CD didn't know that at the time, if we had, I would have included a layer of information about the location of various plants used in the world.

I talked about that with her, and we might do an updated version with that information included.

Nice map! Everything is clean and well done. The only thing that bothered me is the contrast (a bit strong imho) between the withe lands and the grey seas.

There's a lot of information in the map. In fact, the sketch I was given, included all the lands not seen north and south, and the island inset was larger and farther off to the West. And you can see, there's lots of text and names on the map. And I have to avoid text in the gutter, since the map is a spread in the book.

Given the size of the printed page, and all the text that information that had to go in, I choose to do white for the land, to keep readability high. But the darkest part of the sea is only 20% black. So I think it's not that stark, really.

Looks great. Those alchemist circles in the background give the map a great atmosphere without being intrusive.

And you're absolutely right : readibility is a very important point. It's probably just me, the seas are perfect as they are and I don't really know exactly why I have this feeling about the lands being very white... A very nice map above all.

If I came across defensive, I'm sorry. Didn't mean too. When you are making maps for a client for a book, there's a lot of things you have to consider unlike when you are making a map for yourself. Normally I wouldn't leave the land white. And there are bits and pieces of the authors original map in this, because he wanted me to use them. You are sometimes bound by the client.

Sometimes I think it also helps others to explain WHY something is the way it is. Being professional means learning how to work with people so they are happy, while providing solutions that work.
