    Default Hi Hi

So, the other day, I said to myself, "I'm going to make a quick map for reference purposes for this story I may or may not write."

    13 hours later . . .

    Sadi.png

. . . that happened. And here I thought I hated map-making (I really wonder about geography and if I'm doing it right, which usually makes me drop my pen and walk away), but this looks like something I might see in a book! (I was/am very pleased, to say the least.)

After seeing this map, my friend was like, "You should check out the cartographer's guild. Sometimes, I go over there just to look and marvel."

To which I replied, "I would probably go there, look, and then cry in a corner because I feel inferior."

But I came, I looked, (felt inferior (those colors!), but didn't cry (in a corner or otherwise)), and found a very welcoming and helpful community; I read through some threads and saw how people offered critiques and suggestions in response to WIP maps, and I figured I would give it a go (the only way to get better is to hang out with people who are better than me, amirite?).

    So that's why I'm here.

Hi hi. Nice t' meet y'all.

Hi Mars, welcome to the guild. No need to cry indeed, that's a lovely map you made! Have some rep for presenting such a nice piece of work (really like the dragon compass!) with your first post. I think your on a good way, but try not to get caught by the river cops...

(The dragon's my favorite, too. I probably spent only 20 minutes on it, which is the least amount of time I spent on anything, haha! Not fair )

(Rep = reputation, I'm guessing? How's that work, anyways?)

Not the river cops! THEY'RE COMING FOR MY FORKING AND GRAVITY-DEFYING RIVERS *speeds away on scooter*

Yeah that's one of the lessons i learned doing maps: The fun stuff is done fast, the trees take years!

This is nice, I like the pen style and I particularly like how the trees change per the region...
Though I generally do not care about these supposed "river police", I would say (as a friendly critique) that you may need some more variation in thickness and line fidelity.

    For a map being
a quick map for reference purposes
I would say this map is very very nice!

*strokes invisible beard thoughtfully* Yes, I could see the rivers being too uniform in width. I don't think I've ever heard the term "line fidelity" (*pokes google* Is that something about the auto-correcting/stabilization of your markings?), so I'm not sure I understand that part of the critique Thanks for the help, though

Hi Mars, welcome to the Guild and that's a really nice first map. My only suggestion, in addition to what others have said above, is that you try giving your rivers a little more wiggle! Most of the them follow a rather straight course and I think they'd look better with a little more meandering. Excellent start though and look forward to seeing more from you.

@ChickPea -- ah! Maybe that's what Ryusamasan meant. That makes sense. Thanks!

It's looking much better now with the meandering and tapering rivers! Great job Mars, now you're safe...
