    Wip Hannibals March

    I'm starting a new map, which I've been researching for a few days now, "Hannibal's March through the Mountains". I'll be incorporating Jospeh Minard's - "Map of the Losses" to show the troop size as it is reduced by battles, travel and accidents.

    3rd century BC, 2nd Punic War between Carthage and Rome. Rome naval supremacy dominates the region. Carthage has begun to conquer areas on the Iberian Penninsula and Hannibal tries to draw Rome into a conflict to engage in war by attaching the city of Saguntum on the Iberian coas. Rome basically ignores this siege, which requires Hannibal to set out to attach Rome, joining up with allies in northern Italy. This requires marching his troops over the Pyrenees and through mountain passes in the Alps, eventually arriving in the Po Valley to meet up with the Gauls before marching toward Rome.

    Really good start ! Just a few things that bother me with the names. For me, Iberia would be Hispania, France would be Gaul or Gallia and Marseille would be Massilia (an a minor typo with Pyrenees). I'm eager to see your wonderful coloring skills at work on this one. Do you plan on doing something inspired by the colors you can see with satellite pictures ?

    Thanks Thomrey;

    I have what you noted as Hispania as the Iberian Peninsula and lots of reference as either of these, Hispania being the Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula, France should be Gaul and yes Massilia is correct thanks appreciate the detail.

    Update, mountains may be too dense, know I had lots of type on this one, so added it early and will draw behind it to a degree. Comments welcome.### Latest WIP ###HannibalsMarch2.jpg

    Nice start! I think this is going to be another good 'un!

    I know it's early days, but I'm not completely sure about the light-coloured text with the white stroke, however I do appreciate that it'll probably stand out a bit better once the mountains are shaded behind it. Also, I noticed Day 8 text seems have become entangled with Day 10-11.

    I do love how you've shaded it from green to sand-coloured across the full width of the map. That looks great!

    Hmmm, the border to me seems a little to big. A little too distracting from the map I think.
    I agree with ChickPea about the stroked text.
    Other than that it looks very interesting, I'm looking forward to seeing it develop.

    The text needs a lot of editing. You've even got "Hammibal" in one place. You have two virtually identical ambush descriptions. Were there two very similar betrayals, or are "ICY CONDITIONS" and "WHO CAN YOU TRUST" redundant? It seems like both describe the Day 7 ambush?

    You might want to color-code the text a bit more, so that Hannibal and Roman troop movement notes are different colors.

    I like the idea and the general layout. Other than the text, I think the colors are good. I'm looking forward to seeing this develop.

    Interesting subject (as usual) and a good map so far. I like the coastlines and color choices. I agree about the way/trail (I suppose?) being a little too large, I like the effect though.
    My brother lives near Briançon. There's as often, a lot of claims about where exactly Hannibal crossed the alps .

    Thanks for the comments guys and the typos. Ilanthar, I've found about 6 versions of the path Hannibal took, recently the Southern routes are thought to be the more probable. Some old elephant dung is now being looked at to see if they can get any evidence from that? That is the path I am showing - Possible elephant dung and all.

    Here's an update, not sure of anything really? Still playing with type color/effects. I wanted a deeper blue water and I've put in a Blue gradient from the top that fades out to the background, but not sure if it's working, trying to get a Colder feel, I'm sure I'll be trying a few different things here. Comments welcome.
