    Post Greetings from Australia!

    Hi All,

I've been a long time gamer and map aficionado ever since I manage to hand draw Castle Ravenloft from my DMs description, right down to pointing out the only logical place for a secret door we'd missed, and viola there it was...

Moving forward a few decades (cough) I'm still going, and stumbled across GIMP a month or so ago, and this forum shortly afterwards! With my creativity stirred, and a bit/lot/huge amounts of trial and error deciphering RobA's tutorial posts and late nights learning GIMP at the same time, I've decided to map the Axe of the Dwarvish Lords as a learning set to get my head around GIMP. So will post in the WIP for feedback now I'm a member.

Looking forward to adding to the community over time, this place rocks.

    See you around the forums.
    Ra.

Hi Ra and welcome to the Guild. I'm glad to hear you've already stumbled upon the Tutorials area, as there are loads of guides there for Gimp users. I suggest trying out a few, even if the maps aren't really what you want to make. Every tutorial will teach you something new and you can bring those skills to your own mapmaking. I also highly recommend checking out some 'Beginner's Guide to Gimp' type of tutorials on YouTube. Watching a few tutorial videos can be very educational, as well as quite entertaining too!

I'll look forward to seeing your work, but if you're stuck with someone, don't be shy to ask. I'm sure someone will be able to help.

Thanks for the welcome and recommendation ideas ChickPea. I checked out a few of them over the weekend, and already gleaned some ideas and techniques which will help lots. I also stumbled across another post from RobA (is he the resident GIMP guru?) about stair shadows from a 2013 post. His four layer technique is so simple yet effective when you see it outlined!
