    Default Commission: Village of Vouvant

    Hello everyone
A friend of me is writting a book about a medieval city called Vouvant and he need a map of the city.
I've been working with an aerial view as a base and repainted trees and fields using a graphic tablet for more natural shapes.

What a lovely map! It almost looks like water colour, how did you accomplish that?
The buildings do look better zoomed out, because they're very smooth zoomed in.
    The trees look great too.
That beveled text on the river seems a bit out of place on a painterly style map and compared to the other relatively plain test. But that's just my opinion.
Great job. I really, really, like the overall look of this map and can't stop staring at it.

That's really gorgeous. Is that a cemetery in the upper left?

I kind of agree with Josiah about the bevel on the river text, but it's a minor complaint.

Hey nice work on this. I dig really those symbols. I was however thinking the same thing about the text on the river (I'm not a big fan of the font either). But as Diamond mentioned, it's a small thing really. Overall very nice work.

I really enjoy this map, especially the faint texture details in the yards and fields. Can I ask about your methodology on the buildings? I like the roofs and shadowing.

Thanks a lot for the comments rep and critics about the maps everyone
About labels that's true they didnt blend perfectly well with the style of the map, i'm more into sci-fi style and labeling with a "medieval" style map was quite difficult for me.
About the upper left thing, yep it's a cemetery Diamond i used a technique blending an aerial view, filters and painted textures for that one and a few other elements.

For the roofs i only use classical layer effects: drop shadow, inner shadow, colors, textures and bevel. The bevel effect is quite cool to draw roof for square shapes, but a bit ugly on complex forms, the church in the middle in particular was a bit a problem.

This is really great. I find the sharpness of the buildings somewhat jarring when in comparison to the painterly style for the land and trees. Also I'm not personally a fan of the textures not following the flow of the wall, although there is a place for that sort of thing. Great piece though, and the layout is really, really, fantastic.

I agree with Mouse, your friend is very lucky.

Nice work on this, and quite an unusual style. My nitpicks are pretty much covered by other comments above, so I'll just say that I like what you've created very much.
