Default March 2017 Challenge: After the Storm

This entry is more about me having a bit of fun with an idea I had earlier today, than being a serious contender, but I thought I'd put it here alongside the other entries for a bit of company

Its a bit over-saturated and rather dark right now, but I've only been working on it for a couple of hours yet, and GIMP is still rather a long way out of my comfort zone.

There is a backstory, but it just hasn't crystallised into either a news report or a poem just yet, so there's only a place holder on the map for where its going to appear. There's also a really laughable wobbly ham-fisted sketch of the scene that underlines the title above the map.

The story so far is that there's been a storm, and the river has well and truly broken its banks, flooding a vast tract of lowland plain and cutting off small islands of slightly higher ground. The people of the sea have come inland to rescue their land-lubbing cousins in a fleet of small fishing vessels...

Haha - silly me. I'm clearly in one of my fuzzy-brained moods. Please can someone change the title of my thread for me to:

March 2017 Challenge: After the Storm

    Thank you

    Here's the back story...

At noon on the 21st September 2031 a massive storm front crossed the coast of the UK 20 miles north of Gurgle Weir and Guzzlemoth, where it deposited an incredible 50 inches of rain in less than 6 hours on the granite fells above the valley. By 2 am the next day the River Guz was in full flood, while the tidal barrage at Guzzlemoth remained closed against the storm surge of the previous afternoon, effectively trapping the flood water in the valley behind it. The unwitting inhabitants of Gurgle Weir were rudely woken by the silent rise of the water coming up through their floorboards, and having broken out through the tiles they became trapped on their rooftops without any means to call for help - all power to the local communications relay and most of their personal possessions having been lost to the water while they slept.

The people of Guzzlemoth were similarly woken just 2 hours later, but where Guzzlemoth is home to the National Sailing Academy they were able to retrieve the majority of their boats and set a course inland to cut across the inundated fields and rescue the beleaguered people of Gurgle Weir - bearing them safely to where beacon fires had been lit to guide the Guzzlemoth flotilla to higher land beneath a clear and starlit sky on the eve of the 22nd.

I've changed the backstory to make this a historical event. I've also had better ideas about how to portray this map, and I've had a go at making my own parchment. Also just discovered how to warp text in GIMP, but I've only done the title so far because I know there are errors in the rest of it

Looks nice so far, I like this font, and the parchment is looking pretty good too.

    Thanks Kacey

It seems I learn something new every day when I'm doing a challenge map. Today it was two things - how to make parchment, and how to warp text.

Challenges are great for that, they force you to do things you wouldn't normally do. I learned so much from the two challenges I did, and they were the only maps I ever completed...I should do another one, you really do learn allot from them.
