Default Make a Bookmark Project discussion thread

So, following some discussion (or thread hijacking) in this thread, there seems to be some interest in making mappy bookmarks. I'm setting up this thread to gauge interest.

The Guild's 11th Anniversary is coming up in a couple of weeks, and I thought it might be fun to create something themed around that, however that's only an idea and not set in stone.

So, firstly, who's interested in taking part?
How do you feel about making a Guild bookmark?
    Any general thoughts/ideas on this?
Would you prefer a challenge or are you happy to work as part of a group project with no specific start/end dates?

I wondered about setting a defined size and we all create bookmarks that are the same dimensions (again, just an idea open for discussion). I measured a couple of bookmarks that I had lying about the house, and they're both slightly different sizes:

One is 17.5cm x 4.8cm(ish) - my office ruler is not the best for measuring!
    The other is 17.8cm x 5.1cm(ish) - this works out at 7inches x 2inches exactly

I'm not sure if there's a generally accepted size for bookmarks, but perhaps 7x2inches might be an easy size to work with.

So, who's in and who's got opinions on this?! And finally, kudos to Sironae for coming up with the idea that's inspired the rest of us. Thank you!

I'd be interested in taking part! It would work for a challenge pretty well, or just an open ended thing. I can't obviously think how it would work in the same way say the GuildWorld/GuildCity would with them linking to each other, but I'm sure someone out there may have some idea to this.

No idea if there's a set bookmark size or not, as the ones I can think of vary a bit, though 7"x2" sounds reasonable.

I've still got my Guild City project ongoing, but cities always take me forever to do.

Besides a little bookmark is much, much easier to plan and do... or at least it should be!

I got some great ones from bookdepository some years ago.. and a few illustrated by a friend of mine - love a nice bookmark, so much better than a random receipt or post-it ... are you thinking doing a bunch of designs and then people can print them themselves - or actually getting some printed and shipped to people (which would require some different places in the world to ship from to be cheap enough).

I don't think it would really be connected to GuildWorld/City, unless someone wanted to incorporate a map they'd already made into the bookmark. When I talked about the 11th anniversary thing, I was thinking perhaps something where you had a map background and included the Guild's name or website address or something like that. Basically, a promo for the Guild. But, as stated above, that's only one idea and if people would rather do their own thing, that's absolutely fine. You could do both, if you're dead keen.

As for project vs challenge, I think my personal preference would be project. I half wondered about keeping it as an ongoing thing, if it proves popular. We get a lot of new members to the site who are just starting out and not quite sure what to do, and it might be fun to suggest they make a bookmark. It doesn't feel too daunting, though creating something that's only 2 inches wide probably has its own challenges! It might be a nice way for new members to get their feet wet. That's maybe thinking a little too far ahead though.

I think 7x2" might be a good size for everyone to work with. Especially those oddballs who use imperial measurements....

I buy from Book Depository pretty regularly and they always send a bookmark (it was one of theirs that I measured above). I love that they do that. It's such a nice little freebie that costs them next to nothing but it builds goodwill.

I hadn't really thought about printing, tbh. That's maybe getting a bit ahead of ourselves. Not just the setting up of something like that, but there's the copyright issue too. I guess, for now, people can print their own if they'd like.

Yeah, I'm inclined more to the project side of things too as I don't think it's really big enough for a challenge!

Also, this sounds like a good shout ChickPea!

Also, Dan, all you need to too is turn your lovely banner sideways and you're sorted!

I'm definitely in, but just to add to the general confusion (because I'm awkward that way ) how about we make maps that can be used as bookmarks, but which are normal size and shape, and have a sort of bookmark sized window thing that you can move around your chosen map, so that you can take a snapshot of just the right piece of it, and have that particular section as your own uniquely framed bookmark?

Sort of 'compose it yourself' type bookmarks.

    Yes? No?

    What do you think?

Well, I think I'd like to leave it up to the individual how they decide to make their bookmarks. If someone wanted to do this and create a series of bookmarks from the same map or world, that would be super cool. But I also don't want to force that on anyone. Some people may only want to make one or two stand-alone bookmarks. As I see it, the final result would be the bookmark itself. What went into making it would be up to each individual mapmaker.

When are we starting? And where are we putting all these bookmark maps?
