Well done! I love the overall look and feel and especially the forests and the way they look 3D. You are definitely on to something here.
Are the grey areas mountains or clouds? If they are mountains they need some work.
Oh, are you planning to add any locations, like cities? And no rivers?
Gave you some reputation for a great first attempt.

This is very nice. I really like the original look and feel of this map.
Looks great! I really like the background you used, and the little extra contour line.
Maybe you could add a slight bit of foliage or just greener ground around the lakes in the desert. There's one thing I'm not sure about: on the larger island, near the top there are two darker ledges. What's going on there?
The textures are nice, but I think it lacks some additional detail (settlements, rivers, stuff like that) for it to look 'finished'.
Just my 2 cents though.![]()
1st attempt? 4 Hours? Pretty darn good if you ask me.
I dub the newly repped *bonk*
The texture on the mountains could be a bit better, might I suggest going to one of the free texture sites and looking around for something you like.

Looks very nice.
I like what you've done with the forests. I'd go a bit easier on the drop shadow thou. Drop it down to distance 1-2 spread 1-2, right now they seem to be floating about.
The mountains could use some blending too.
Very nice first map!
Nice first map post - have some REP for posting a map on your first post!
I'm looking through an especially dark monitor so some of your details are lost in what I can see, so I should view this from a different computer. However, very dark backgrounds on a map is not my favorite way to go, buy its a style choice really.
One thing, I notice somewhat photorealistic terrain, with a styled coastline with the outside line, and a very painterly ocean - seems to be an odd juxtaposition of many styles. You ought to focus on one way or the other and get the rest of the composition more in sync with each other.
Also your mountains seem to float over the map, maybe found someway to blur or feather the edges of the mountains so they blend in the terrrain better. Good, first try though!

Thanks for the advice.
I added some rivers, lightened it up, feathered the mountains and got rid of the styled coastline.
You still have the drop shadow, but it's a nice improvment
I think that the best compliment that I can give to anyone is when I say "I gotta try that" and "I'm snaggin it for future reference"...both of those apply to this. Nice painterly style, I like the first one, but without the ring around the land. Nice job.
