    Default Visit exciting Jade City!

I love it when the novel I'm doing the maps for allow me to do something that isn't a standard fantasy map. I love doing those. But it's fun when you can work outside of that.

Jade City, by Fonda Lee is a novel that is comparable to Earth in the 1970's. Jade is mined and shaped, for its mystical/magical properties and how those who train with it enhance their abilities.

I did the island map as something you might find in a textbook. The city map was a page ripped out from a large spiral bound atlas.

It's really great to see so many novels that are pushing the idea that fantasy is more than elves, dwarves and dragons. There will always be a big place in my heart for elves and dragons. It's just great to see fantasy grow and redefine it's self.

I just bought this, actually based not only on the cool ideas, but on the strength of your maps!

OMG, thank you very much. That means a lot to hear that.

Yep, I've been really enjoying the love-fest between you and Orbit. Seems like every Orbit fantasy novel I pick up has one of your maps in it. That's awesome.

It just happened on it's own really. I did a few maps, and the editors really loved what I was doing. Next thing I knew editors were putting in requests months early to have me do the maps on their books! Some authors started to really get in on it as well. They wanted me for their maps.

They really loved my design approach to creating a map. Make it as if the map could be an actual object in the world.

Someone's already said that about these maps.

"Tim's maps for #JadeCity are AMAZING. They complement @FondaJLee's worldbuilding perfectly and feel like maps you could buy from a newsstand in Janloon. @orbitbooks"

That's exactly what I go for when making a map. To give the idea that it's part of the world.

Great work on these. The island map is an attractive classic-style fantasy map, but I particularly like the city map. It's beautiful clear and colourful, and I love the 'torn out of a notebook' effect!
